Gun owners and litter bugs

Seems like every shooting area I go to is littered with old targets, birds,broken glass bottles, t.v.'s, and things that don't make good targets. Not to mention all the left behind shotgun hulls, and steel cased ammo. Gun owners know that we are under a microscope and leaving a messy shooting area is just what the anti's want. I have never seen one person bring a trash bag and pack out a load a trash. Why are some gun owners litter bugs with a I don't care attitude? Have they really become that uncivilized that they wish harm on their own hobby?

Some people simply don't care and have the mindset that "someone" else will come and clean it up or who cares i don't live here and you can't see it from my house. yuk yuk yuk. Those people being gun owners is inconsequential. Plenty of people own guns and do not belong to the NRA either.

Most of the people I know bring bags and take out as much as they brought, and in many cases more.

Not all the littering comes from the shooters either.

People who dump like areas for the same reasons we do.

Out in the middle of nowhere with walls and no line of sight.

Unfortunatly whether shooters start it, or whether the dump spot was already there for the first shooter to shoot at. Trash begets more trash. It multiplies.

That's why I always try to take more out that I bring in. Sometimes that is hard when it comes to shells and stuff, but I do my best.

But definitly any bottles paper or plastic is going to get cleaned up.

And my little area where I set up, is going to be cleaner than when I drove up in most cases.

Last figure I heard was the United States had somewhere around 80 million people who own firearms. That said, last figure I heard for the NRA was only about 4 to 5 million members. Not a good ratio.

I honestly haven't been to a range of any kind in awhile, but when I see the people around me it's not really a surprise the least they do is leave their trash behind. It's part of the reason I haven't been shooting, because even at the indoor range people don't sweep their brass or clean up their trash.

I think the attitude is such that "can't see it from my house", or " it was already like that when I came" Somewhat childish, but I can't figure for the life of me why people don't treat informal shooting ranges like their own.

Exactly! Some people are just pigs. Reminds me of my "Use an Ashtray" rant last year.

Some of you San Diego natives might remember the shooting spot in the late 70's early 80's just about 2 miles from the Tecate border, it closed long ago. I remember as a kid going there for lessons, and when I was bored shooting the old rusty car with my Ruger 10/22.

I grew up in Socal. In the 80's we used to go around the Jacumba area, right on the border, lots of shooting places there. Haven't been there in a loooong time though.

I seen at Angeles some ppl just leave there broken targets out on the range and just leave. so during cease fire i will go grab it and bring it back. Might as well, the range officers normally wont reopen the line till the broken targets come off the range

Because guns attract a lot of A-holes who could really care less about gun rights or keeping shooting spots open, and the other half probably figure if a spot is already trashed why waste their time picking up their own trash. I mostly see people shooting bottles out in the desert, and last time whoever was doing it decided to set up all these bottles right on the trail for other people to run over on their bikes. They must have been quad riders, the same people who spin doughnuts around their own camps all day long.

And 99% of the time those bottles are empty beer bottles. A great combination.

I remember that. It was on the West side of hwy 188.

People had to stop using it because some agri school started growing hay or alfapha or something and they did not want lead to get into the bales

I also remember quite a few other spots in that area as well.

Fortunatly at the time I had the run of several large ranches, so finding spots to shoot was not a problem like it is now.

some people just done care at all. i was taught to leave the range better than how i found it, so if that means raking up the hulls and brass, thats what gets done

Yes that was exactly the place! Your right it's all hay field now. I have fond memories shooting there with my Ruger 10/22 at 6 years old. Its where I first learned how to zero a scope. Back then I shot steel plates, come to think of it, I still do. I guess you remember Weissers Guns too?
