Internet - " all designations refer to the uppers, the A1 fielded in vietnam had a triangular handgaurd a 1:12 tiwsit a light barrel and was an utter failure. the A2 has a heavy barrel a 1:7 twist circular handguards and the usual non-detachable carry handle and front sight. the A3 is the A2 with a detachable carry handle over a pictanny rail. now the A4 is the A3 with a removable front sight over a pic rail also."
