flying with guns and ammo ? ? ?

So Ive got a basic understanding of what needs to be done in order to do this, but I just wanted to make sure Im on and the up and up before I do this.

I plan to bring my AR pistol and a Sig9mm with me. Both to be locked in the same case, which will be my only piece of checked in luggage.

Just to be on the safe side, I called Virgin and outside of reciting the standard TSA rules to me were not really helpful.

TSA says a handgun container can contain up to 4 handguns.

With my AR legally being a pistol (but having a large case since it is a 10.5in barrel) should I be concerned about having the Sig in there as well, or am I gtg?
    TIA !

You might get a bit more from the wiki article -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Flying_with_firearms -- but I don't know if will be much help.

Librarian, read through all that already and havent really found the answer.
Thanks anyways though. I might try to call the TSA directly see if I have any luck there.

You are allowed up to four handguns in one container by TSA. Indiviidual airline policies can differ but I haven't found one that limits the number more than the TSA limits. I've carried two long guns in one container (TSA limit) on numerous airlines with no problems.

Since you have only one checked bag make sure that the airline allows you to carry the (11 Lbs) of ammo locked in the same case. Many airlines require ammunition to be in a seperate locked bag. Also remember, no TSA locks on gun cases.

I find it helpful to have a copy of the TSA regulations and the airline's baggage policy on firearms (from their website) with me when I travel with guns.

I have flown many times with up to 4 firearms. Best advice I can give is to check in early in order to declare your special item. If you are only declaring pistols then I always but the locked case inside another larger sturdy suitcase so no inquiring baggage handler take an interest in it. In the larger suitcase I will store my ammo. Always have your cell phone # on your ID tag just in case TSA has questions. TSA usually will check all firearms to insure they are unloaded, I stick range flags in each gun and mags out.

It isn't really that difficult but remember each airport is different some are easy some take a little more time. Stay cool and if any problems crop up ask for a supervisor immediately.

I have flown at least 15 times with firearms and have never had a problem, BTY my wife works for the airlines,

            one more thing to add
make sure you get to the luggage carousel at your destination point early, especially if you are using a case known to contain firearms. not good if someone grabs it and heads out the door before you.
