    No serial number transfer

    Hi all,

I'm looking to buy my friends old single shot bolt action .22 rifle. It's pre 68 and was made without a serial number.

Can someone please confirm it's not a big deal? I'm guessing they just put no serial number in the box? or something like that.

    thanks!

Pre-1968, Federal laws did not require serial numbers on firearms.

If you can determine that the rifle is 50 or more years old (via make/model), then you can legally transfer it (cash & carry) without needing to use a CA FFL dealer.

If it is less than 50 eyars old, then it needs to be transfered through a CA FFL dealer. Serial number gets recorded as NSN (No Serial Number) on the 4473/DROS.

The abbreviation inserted in the box is where the SN would normally appear on the 4473 is "NSN", which stands for "no serial number". Long gun DROS do not have serials listed.

Since it's a C&R due to it being over 50 years old you don't need to do a private party transfer you can buy it direct from him. Just write NSN on the receipt and full deacribe the rifle.

Unless it's an interstate sale, in which he would still have to go through a dealer.
        Please read the Calguns Wiki
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.
