    Shipping a handgun.

I am in the process of selling my Ruger and someone asked me how much it would be to ship. Do I ship it UPS, FedEx, carrier pigeon? I tried UPS and wont give me a price on insurance on the package. What can I be expecting to pay for this thing shipped in just insurance fees? Its a Ruger P89

I think you have to take it to an FFL and have them ship it to his FFL. Each FFL will charge something. You will have to talk with one near you.

You can ship the gun to a FFL by FedEx or UPS over night delivery from a hub not a store. You need to verify that the FFL will accept the gun from a non FFL. It is not illegal but some are picky and do not care what the laws are about shipping. It will cost about $50 for shipping, FFL can use USPS and cost is cheaper so if you have a FFL near that will ship it may save you a few bucks or not

incorrect. there is no CA or federal law that requires you to use an FFL to ship it to his FFL. UPS/Fedex will accept a shipment from a non-licensee if you are shipping it to an FFL. the only catch is whether his FFL will accept a shipment from a non-licensee (it would be a company policy of the FFL whether he allows such shipments).

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

          It can be a pain.

You can't ship direct, you have to ship to a FFL.

Some FFLs won't accept shipments from private parties.

Most shippers will only ship overnight.

I think the CGF Wiki has info on how to do it.

Thanks guys. Well unless the buyer wants to set this entire hassle up, I wont be shipping it.

Although there are ways to ship a pistol yourself, I have found that it is more cost effective to have my FFL ship it (about $40). We have to send by overnight, an FFL can send by USPS. This also solves the problem of some FFLs not accepting shipments from individuals.

I just went through this exact same scenario. Yes a person can ship a handgun with UPS and USPS. But as others have stated some FFL's will not accept a gun from a non FFL. And to top it off, the is a mountain of FUD when you do call the local UPS etc. First round said it wasnt doable. Second round, I directed the neigh sayer to their own corporate website. She put me on hold and then told me it had to be completely disassembled according to federal law. Riiiight.

Easiest way is to take it to your favorite FFL and charge the buyer for the shipping.
