I was looking to purchase a choate dragunov stock for my Chinese sks type D but I'm a little unsure about what I would need to do to the gun to make it CA legal. Just need to know what I would have to do to make it CA complaint?

1. Is the Chinese (Norinco) SKS-D currently in CA?
2. Is the Chinese (Norinco) SKS-D a Registered Assault Weapon?
If the answer to question #1 is No and the answer to question #2 is No. Then there is nothing you can do to make it CA legal and do not bring it to CA.
If the answer to question #1 is Yes and the answer to question #2 is No. Then contact a lawyer, because you are in possession of an unregistered assault weapon.
If the answer to question #2 is Yes. Then you can do whatever you want as long as you do not violate Federal/state SBR/MG laws.Last edited by Quiet; 02-02-2012, 4:47 AM.sigpic

I got it from wild bill guns in elk grove California so I'm pretty sure it's legal but I want to get choate stock for it. Is that a legal stock in CA? I'm going keep the original ten round magazine on it. So I don't need no bullet button but is there any other laws I need to watch out for?Comment

Clarify what type of Chinese SKS you have.I got it from wild bill guns in elk grove California so I'm pretty sure it's legal but I want to get choate stock for it. Is that a legal stock in CA? I'm going keep the original ten round magazine on it. So I don't need no bullet button but is there any other laws I need to watch out for?
SKS that uses detachable magazines are assault weapons [PC 30510(a)(11)]. They can be made legal by rendering them back to the oringinal fixed 10 round magazine.
Chinese SKS that uses AK magazines are assault weapons and nothing can be done to make it CA legal. [PC 30710]
Chinese SKS that use AK magazines were advirtised as "SKS Sporter" but are marked Norinco SKS-D and Norinco SKS-M. So, they are considered make/model banned assault weapons and nothing can be done to make them CA legal. They were legally sold in CA during the 1990s, but then CA DOJ declared them illegal and owners of those rifles had to turn them in to CA DOJ or sell them out-of-state before 01-01-2000.
Penal Code 30510
As used in this chapter and in Sections 16780, 17000, and 27555, "assault weapon" means the following designated semiautomatic
firearms:
(a) All of the following specified rifles:
(11) SKS with detachable magazine.
Penal Code 30710
Notwithstanding paragraph (11) of subdivision (a) of Section 30510, an "SKS rifle" under this article means all SKS rifles commonly referred to as "SKS Sporter" versions, manufactured to accept a detachable AK-47 magazine and imported into this state and sold by a licensed gun dealer, or otherwise lawfully possessed in this state by a resident of this state who is not a licensed gun dealer, between January 1, 1992, and December 19, 1997.sigpic
