Making things in the USA costs money, especially things like the 1911. There are many steps from the forgings to the hand fitting that is required, even on production guns.

And RIA is not made in America, hence the lower price.

There are plenty of Sub $600 1911s out there and $600 is about the range for most decent quality guns like glocks and such.

But the frame of a 1911 is metal and that costs more to product than poly. And yea, "made in USA" typically costs a bit more.

I really don't see 1911 costing any more that other handguns like Brownings, Sigs, HKs, FN and the like. It's just that they are very customizable which lends to them having higher priced versions.

A more sensical topic would be "Why are HK handguns so expensive?" lol

There are a lot of high end 1911's that might be skewing your view of it, my Springfield Armory Stainless was only about $50 more than a basic CZ 75 when I bought it last year.

the other part of it is, there are a lot of less expensive 1911s out there, but they are not on the California Roster, and likely never will be, example, the para ordnance GI can, in most states, be found for about $500-550, but since it has no mag disconnect or LCI, you will not be able to buy it new in california(without a SSE) untill the roster is gotten rid of.

1911s cost more because they are durable and will last for years.
The polymer framed pistols are really only good for firing a few rounds before they are relegated to the chew-toy category.

I know it would be blaspheme, but COULD you make a 1911 with a polymer frame?
The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

                      looks like RIA already did:

Question for you, you were the first in California to research gun laws and start selling California legal AR15's correct?
