Angeles is a clean, well run range. Their safety rules are strictly enforced (I consider this a good thing). They have actual restrooms instead of port-o-potties, which women generally appreciate.

Steel provides instant feedback. When you fire, you either hear a "ding" or you know you missed. Excellent for running multiple target drills and making bets with buddies.

Angeles' steel pistol gallery is a wide assortment of different outlines/shaped targets at different ranges. You shouldn't be too disappointed.

.22s don't move the steel as much and are hard to hear unless you're wearing electronic ears in my experience.

Steel is also nice instead of shooting paper, taping, posting new targets, etc. In the end, you'll do both.

If you're working on improving accuracy, shooting at steel is limited.

I like the instant feedback though. Different tools for different purposes.

Have fun at Angeles. I really like their rifle range as well. Nice concrete benches with room to go prone. Get your stuff on the back table quickly and establish an area for yourself. Some of these old guys take up WAAAAY too much room for their stuff. One guy can take up more than 6 feet of table space if allowed to do so. God forbid they put some crates/boxes under the table instead of on top of them.

Steel is basicly a hit / miss target. Unlike paper, you usually cant see exactly where you hit the target, you just hear the sound of the hit.

The only other issue is range. If you get to close you have to worry about fragments coming back at you.

You can always...Well, if it's your own target, you can spray paint it after a grouping to see how precise your shooting. I haven't shot steel either, OP. Have wanted to pretty bad for a while haha. Going to buy my steel target in Feb. and looking forward to going to Angeles one day to shoot their gallery.

Man, I think shooting steel is a ton of fun. Who cares how close your hole is to the bull's eye, hearing the clank is far more gratifying, especially when you are quickly moving from one target to another.

After I started shooting the plates at Angeles paper has just become so boring.

Cowboy action shooting or SASS is all steel target shooting and it is a blast. I love that instant sound feedback.

On a swinging steel target will FMJ still be a problem ?

ASR's pistol steel gallery starts at 35 yards so you rarely get any bullet splatter coming back. Have fun!

good quality AR500 targets will withstand nearly any popular caliber even if it is fmj, plus the splatter is all but eliminated due to the extreme hardness of the metal. A good target design will have somewhat of a forward cant to help with deflecting rounds in a safe direction. Also, I hear there is a vendor on cal guns who sells them really CHEAP!!!

I'm most likely adding the extra $20-30 for AR550 for the target I'm buying. Just for the extra assurance that my Mauser and other future rifles won't ding it up at 100 yards.

ASR is a great range. It has a big steel gallery for pistol shooting with lines of swinging targets starting at 35 yards out to 100 yards. There's lots to shoot at. There is also a good amount of steel set up on the rifle range at 200, 300, 400, 500 and maybe a couple at 600. There's nothing like the instant report of a steel gong. You can see it, hear it and in a sense feel the impact. No questions. You hit it.

unless your mauser is a 50 bmg you are wasting your money, my 3/8 ar 500 plates have been documented to withstand 338 lapua fmj at 100 yards witout damage.
