    Moving to California from Texas

    Hey Guys,

I am a noob here but heard great things about Calguns. I live in Texas and will likely move to California for a job. Obviously I have done some reading and know that my second amendment rights will be severely impinged in Cali.

That being said, I am looking for some practical advise on the following:

    • HK MR556 - I have an AAC muzzle brake and mount for my suppressor. If I install a bullet button, can I bring this rifle with me?
    • Concealed Handgun License - I have one in Texas and know that it is not recognized in California, I am looking to move to Santa Clara county - any suggestions on how I can get a conceal license there?
    • What do I do with my suppressors? Should I put them in a storage box in Texas? In Nevada where I can visit occasionally? Is there a place where Californians store their Class 3 gear?
    • I have a stock Benelli M4 - do I need to do anything to bring with me to Cali?
    • I know I need to register my pistols but I have a Sig Mosquito with a threaded barrell.....any problems here?

Any advise on the above would be greatly appreciated.

    Your Texan brother-in-arms.....

Oh, Super, you have culture-shock on your near-term agenda...

    See http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Mo..._with_firearms for a start.

Santa Clara is not impossible for LTC, but difficult.

Yes, unfortunately, the threaded barrel is a problem.

The on-list HKs are "HK: 91, 93, 94, PSG-1" so a bullet-button should fix your HK MR556; remember no 10+ mags can come in assembled, but disassembled into parts kits they're fine.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

      Thanks Librarian!

I have bookmarked that link you sent me.

      - I guess I need a new Sig barrel....

      - I forgot that I also have a HK SP89.....do I need to store that somewhere? Is there a "bullet button" for MP5s?

I heard there was a place where Californians store their Class 3 firearms close by but out of state.....is this true?

Looks like I need to stash my suppressors in a Class 3 friendly state.

      Thanks guys.

For the HKSP89 look at http://www.solartactical.com/, he is a memeber and does a lot of custom bullet button and kydex work.

If he went featureless with his HK556 could he use his high cap mags?
Assuming he owned them before the federal AWB? or becasue he did not own them in Ca at that time would it be considered "importation"?

The Class 3 stuff i would store out of state. Either with a really good friend or in maybe a safety deposit box or something.

Welcome to Ca. Where about are you going to be moving to? Oh and enjoy the culture shock.

Hey, I will likely be moving into Santa Clara county. I think I am just going to add the bullet button on my MR556. I still have my Benelli M4 for home defense.

            See:

It looks like I will be storing my suppressors in Texas. I am unsure what I will do with my SP89 yet.

Any advice on how to get a conceal carry in Santa Clara county?

The good news is that I get to keep my Texas Conceal License, I just need to change my address and pay a fee. When I want to renew, I just have to visit Texas and take the course there.

At least I can use my convertible in the summer in California Hopefully my HK P30 will be on hip and not stored in my lock box unloaded.....

The bolded part. If he had'em he could use'em but he's not allowed to bring'em.

              Darned 'em'.

I am sure you guys are frustrated with this.....but as fellow law abiding citizens, California sure makes it hard not to be an accidental felon.

You will regret moving here. This state is headed over the falls in a barrel, although I can understand the job thing.

That's good to know. I didn't realize we actually still had the barrel.

I thought we were about to go over with no protection at all.

If you haven't seen it with your own eyes,
or heard it with your own ears,
don't make it up with your small mind,
or spread it with your big mouth.

I stand corrected, you are absolutely right. We don't have the barrel anymore, but the picture sums it up better than 1000 words from me ever could.

I did not see him ask any questions about handguns, and no one offered...

Undoubtedly he has heard about the "California Handgun Roster" and some folks mistakenly believe they cannot bring a handgun into the state unless it is on the roster. This is NOT true, if he owns it prior to moving here he can certainly bring it with a few caveats - no magazines over 10 rounds can come with the gun unless disassembled, no threaded barrels, and no Taurus Judge handgun because it's a shotgun with a revolving barrel.

In fact, if there is any handgun he thinks he might like to own but which is not currently on the roster (either new, or classic old models) he needs to buy them prior to moving here. After getting here, they can still be obtained but only through a costly and awkward process known as the single shot exemption (SSE) conversion. Basically the gun gets converted to a 1-shot pistol prior to sale. Then afterwards, the conversion is reversed to restore it to it's original function. There is cost and the awkward bit of finding someone to perform the conversion and transfer.

                          Just food for thought.
The one thing worse than defeat is surrender.

Pickup some good hard to get off roster handguns before you move out this way.
