If memory serves, Fedex and UPS both have company policies in place that firearms can only be shipped from locations with a scheduled daily pickup, or from one of their shipping hubs. Might just be handguns, but I'm going off memory here.

His question about a "license" is totally bogus though. If it's company policy, fine, then all he had to do was state the company policy.
"Are you bringing in any weapons?"
    "Of course not!"
    "You're not changing anything."

So he accepted the package and you still called and demanded that they punish him?

No, he called and asked that he be properly informed.

No, he made a complaint about the driver.

Do you demand the manager any time your waitress makes a mistake?

If my waitress tells me I can't order the steak because I don't have a steak license, then tells me it's illegal for me to order the steak, then argues with me for five minutes before finally accepting my order, yes, I will talk to her manager.

If she brings me bourbon on the rocks instead of neat I will totally let it slide.

Some people are delusional & erroneously believe that just wearing some type of uniform gives them special powers or authority over others. Most who are like that were probably abused as young children. If they give you $#!^, you can be happy to know that most will have a shorter life expectancy & the live a less fulfilling life than you do. Most suffer from stress or behavior related health issues like lung/prostrate cancer or heart disease. Failed marriages are more common, along with a higher suicide rate. If they push too far, you can have a bit of fun with them, if you know how to push the right mental buttons. That does lower you down to their level though & is like making fun of the mentally retarded. Not recommended to do that with the ones that carry guns though.

why did you tell him what you were shipping? why not just hand it to him like any other box and be on your way?

Start ordering ammo, boolits, steel targets Etc... Whatever you need that is heavy. Then when he delivers and asks for signature, ask for his license, drivers license, ammo delivery license, hazmat shipping permits(lead from boolits), he will get the picture.

Isn't there something that says you have to actually drop off the package at the FedEx hub? I know for us FFL holders, you need to bring the USPS package to the post office. Maybe it's the same thing for FedEx? I'd have to read the regs they have, but it would make sense.

FedEx and UPS act as both common carriers and contract carriers. Their published rules for people using them as a common carrier require that you either ship firearms from your regular daily pickup account or take the firearms to a company owned shipping location. They both also require that handguns be shipped via an overnight service level.

But acting as contract carriers they both often make special deals with big customers like S&W that allow firearms to be picked up via "call tag", which is what probably happened in the OP's case. They also make special deals with big shippers to allow handguns to be shipped via slower/cheaper service levels.

UPS picked up my Beretta from home, no declaration necessary by me, unless it was coded on the label.

Sent my Springfield back for some warrantee work & custom stuff, they provided the shipping label, the instructions stated FedEx will only ship guns from main hubs, brought mine there in the gun case, guy was cool, found a box that fit & only asked if it was unloaded.

but I have a licence for that!
