    Hoppes No. 9 Solvent

    The label states "contains kerosene".

Is kerosene the only ingredient in the famous #9 solvent?

    does anyone know??

Because I can find kerosene for a lot less than $12.00 for two pints.

    Get your harpoon

The original #9 had whale oil. Might be hard to find these days. Do you know any eskimos? This is the formula
You do not have to be crazy to hang out with me. I'll train you!

"original formula" implies it has changed. What's the current formula?

Google "_______ MSDS" to find the sheet for most any chemical product.

Kerosene is a great general purpose solvent. High flashpoint and cuts oil/grease well. Its often used to clean and degrease motorcycle chains, machinery, etc. From the MSDS it looks like #9 is roughly half kerosene and ammonia with a splash of two other things.

I have an original bottle of Hoppes #9. Dates to the 50s.. still sealed. Probably has Whale Oil. I bet it works better than the modern formula.

Try Ed's Red. Once you do, you will never buy commercial gun solvents again.
Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be eaten.

The original formula had benzine in it---a cancer causing chemical---I too still have a very old bottle in it's original box. I use Remclean or Shooters Choice these days.

As a painter who works with raw chemicals, or did, before everything went "green". I can honestly say, the more harmful and dangerous, the more beautiful the finish, and the more durable.

That also goes for cleaners and solvents. Evntually the kerosene in Hoppes will be replaced with windex...

I don't know if they still sell it, but Bruno's Shooters in AZ used to sell repackaged Hoppe's #9 with the appropriate amount of benzene added to it to equal the "original formula".
