Need some info on gun lock laws

Hey everyone I just completed a PPT (i was buyer) of a handgun today and even though the handgun i was buying was transferred in a locking case with a key I was charged for a cable lock? This was my first PPT transfer for a handgun and I was told that "it's state law that any handgun bought or transferred has to have a cable lock". My question is.......is this true? Does this only apply to handguns? The cable lock wasn't expensive or anything but I had no idea that if you have a locking case that you have to buy separate lock. Enlighten me Calguns. thx

That is the same thing I was told yesterday when I did a PPT trade with another Calgunner. He told the guy he would bring in a lock forthw long gun. He was told he had to show he purchased te lock within 30 days of this transaction or he had to buy one.

I was asked if I needed one and I told him I would bring in my proof of purchase for my safe and he informed me I still had I buy a lock. The state of kalifornastan requires a purchase of a lock for every weapon that is drosed. I asked him if this was new and he informed me it is 3 years old. I this true?

It's almost true. A gun lock "suitable to the firearm" purchased within the last 30 days on handguns. Cable lock is one way to satisfy that in most cases. Locking cases and gun safe affidavits don't cover it. There is no requirement that the gun lock was new when you bought it. The PO can sell you the lock he has for any amount ($0). Some shops provide a "new" lock obtained at the local Sheriff or other public source.

Handguns need the lock or the proof of purchase within the last 30 days, no way around it.

Long guns are the same as the handguns but you can get the safe affidavit exemption.

Not correct. State law can be satisfied with a Safe affidavit. But, Federal law requires that a lock accompany a handgun. Some FFLs just don't understand the two laws and how they work together so, they require that you buy a lock no matter what. The thing is, that there is no federal requirement for the lock to be purchased and no proof of purchase is required. FFLs can GIVE you a lock or a lock could come with the handgun to satisfy federal law. Then, to satisfy state law, you can fill out a safe affidavit. See, no PURCHASE or proof of purchase is required.

As well the "30 day" part isn't (TMK)

I've had the PO issue me a receipt for the cable lock which had been supplied by the mfg when he bought the Sig. This satisfied the 30 day requirement.

2nd gov't issued ID verifying address is required to pick up the handgun too. Not required for long guns if your primary ID and your current address (on form) agree.

can't you return the lock after you walk out with the firearm?

Buy a lock from Big 5 or something and return it after you're done with it. The law is absolutely pointless when most guns come with locks.
