    Stupid Garand stories by "experts"

Is anyone else annoyed by the utter b.s. perpetuated by gun shows (in this case "Triggers: Weapons that changed the world") about certain weapons.

Scene shows guy firing a Garand and clip ejecting with last round fired...

Host: "I did notice that when you ran dry on this, that clip ejected from the weapon and made a very distictive sound. It seems like that would be a disadvantage."

"Expert": "The Garand ping....it was. When the enemy heard the ping, they'd pop up and fire. The G.I.s figured out a way around that. They'd take an empty clip and keep it in their pocket...throw it down on the ground...nazis would pop their heads up and, BANG!"

What a load of utter horse @#$$. As if nazis are like Pavlov's dog or something and just lose all sense of self preservation when they hear a Garand clip hit the ground. I don't know who made this idiotic lie up but common sense would tell you not to stick your head up in a firefight just because you think ONE guy might be reloading. What about the guy standing next to him with 5 rounds still left in his Garand? What about the BAR 3 guys over or the 1919 hosing down the tree line?

All of this is even assuming that the German could even hear the "ping" of a spent clip over the normal noises of battle or after firing his k98 repeatedly without ear protection. I know the winners get to write the history books but it's just stupid to think that dropping a clip on the ground would start a game of nazi whack-a-mole.

    Experts my @#$!

A guy on TV tested that theory. Yeah, not an issue in the real world.

I've heard it here on Calguns long before "Triggers" was a twinkle in the producer's eye.

Why do they keep this stupid story going? If you think logically about it for even a split second, you'd know it's b.s.

l went through basic training at Ft Leonard Wood in 1961 and all drill intructors were all WWll vets, not once did they say anything about the ping, that I can remember, and besides that on the M1 firing range we didn't wear ear protection then and with all the firing and ringing in your ears you couldnt hear the ping anyway and Im sure the enemies ears were ringing also. A platoon of 20 is firing and 4 guys eject their clips, well that would let see......hmmmm that would make 16 that still had ammo, but I guess it could be plausible if 1 on 1, but how long does it take to put in a new clip and Im sure the GI is behind some protection

Because people are willing to believe it, and it sounds "cool" that nazis would have been that stupid.

Problem 1: Not going to hear it in the distance, let alone over the sounds of gun fire, not even including shooting without hearing protection.

Problem 2: Assuming they could hear it, since when would one *ping* mean everyone with that one soldier was all out of ammo at the same time? Epsecially when that "oh, they must be out of ammo" sound noise would have come from the side still shooting at you.

If Hans and Franz both heard a ping, Hans sticks his head up and takes a .30-06 to the dome, is Franz so stupid he'd do the same thing?

It's the gun world equivalent of an old wive's tale.

Larry Vickers did a test of that on one of his shows. Simply put, you could not here the ping even when it was just two people 25 yards away.

If you couldn't hear it in a test, imagine what it would be like on a full on battlefield.

for the same reason all guns are reported as AK47's and the mere sound of a pump shotgun being racked will cause a bad guy to lose 10lbs of bodily fluids.

You mean the sound of my mossberg chambering a round isn't the brown noise?

I know how you feel. You want to hurl a brick through the television. Get rid of your tv, cancel your cable contract, and tell them all where they can go.... problem solved. I did it years ago.

it actually works in near-close quarters, I've seen it done during reenactments.

It wasn't a ping at all.

The Jerry's would hear the "smoosh" as the clip dropped in to the mud, or the "ftssss" if it was hot and hit the snow.

Der master race had really good hearing, don't you know!

My uncle that fought in WWII told me the same story, but he told me a lot of stories! LOL

He was a great storyteller and a really engaging guy. Still, I wouldn't use his story as an unimpeachable source for this one.
