Remembering long gone outdoor ranges throughout the state?

I remember one in the city of Irvine (Orange county) right off the 5 fwy that was an outdoor range. I think it was the last outdoor range in Orange county that was forced to close due to developement. As I recall, it was south west of the old MCAS -El Toro.

Another one I remember as a kid was up in the city of Yorba Linda, north of Yorba Linda Blvd, and west of Fairmont. Anyone remeber that place from the 70's?

Also, there was the Long Beach Police range that was open to the public but shut down due to resident complaints.

Brea (Orange Co.) had one up in the hills for the police dept, but residents and development closed that as well.

In Angeles Nat'l forest, a place called "pigeon pass" that was open shooting, now gone thanks to the USDA.

Know of any others that bring back memories?

Texas Canyon, near the Saugus/Newhall area. It was closed several years back due to "urban sprawl" AND gang bangers practising their drive-by shooting.

Numerous desert shooting areas that became "protected" parks. I learned how to shoot in the Red Rock Canyon region, which is now off limits to any shooting.

Even the vastness of the Mojave Desert is now under BLM control, and they often place restrictions on those lands, for one reason or another. The latest restriction was due to them having found ONE desert tortoise that "might" have been shot to death (it COULD have been run over by an off-road vehicle, but they supposedly found some shell casings NEAR that squashed tortoise!)

There was a BLM maintained place out side of Sonora (Northen Cal) that closed in the late 80's due to trash. There were also several imprompt and questionably legal locations in the Santa Cruz mountain area that started being enforced in the late 80's. Ahh the fun I used to have out there

South Coast in Irvine near the 241 closed due to toll road
I really miss this one, used to go bust caps at lunch or evenings, was 2 miles from my house
I believe it's now a cement plant for more development
Here's an aerial view of it bak in the day

You used to be able to shoot on No Main Divide road in the Cleveland, closed due to trash and antis

Coto de Caza shotgun don't know why closed

Huntington Beach Police pistol, closed due to accidental death and stray rounds on houses

San Clemente shotgun don't remember it, but along the ridge I've seen a lot of broken clays

Laguna Hills shotgun, closed and was a driving range for years. They still had the skeet houses dividing the golf lanes

San Joaquin duck club, now protected park

On old (~1975) topo maps I see a gun club in Turtle Rock and a game bird farm in Lake Forest about a half mile from my condo, that location is a church now

It really sucks that the nearest outdoor range is at least an hour away. I can't believe all these folks who gripe when they don't have a range within 10 minutes of home.

Back when I started shooting, my Dad would take us up Angeles Crest and you cound shoot anywhere you wanted just off the road.

Outdoor range in Santa Cruz County

                Just an FYI.

There is still an outdoor range in the Santa Cruz area, but...you have to be a member. It's nice to have a range SO close to home. I just shot a few hours ago...Ahhhhh!

The USFS has been really agressive about closing shooting areas because of trash and drunk/high gang bangers. I would leave when the 'hood would show up. It gets very dangerous when those guys start shooting. Full auto MAK 90's beer/dope and young men = bad ju-ju.

Yeah know what you mean, one time at Texas canyon. A gang banger looking guy whas trying to impress his girlfriend by shooting in the air with his lever action. His intent was trying to scare us away. He was at a higher area of the canyon. He thought there was only one person becasue we were behind my truck. So we opened up with our HK 91, HK93 and AR 15 against the hills. Those two left so fast dont think they packed anything other than themsleves.

Silverado Gun Club at the mouth of Silverado Canyon Rd. Closed over 20 years ago for development (that has yet to occur). It was a great place to retreat from the bussle of Orange County. The rangemaster, Charlie, was an old coot that I really enjoyed talking to. Boy how I yearn for the old days.....
