    Question about ARs and taxes

It's been a while since I've been on the site, but I've just found out that Colt is now offering a California-compliant AR. I'm intrigued and a little tempted to pick one up.

I'm curious about one thing though. I already have a couple of ARs, but they are mixmasters. If I get a Colt it'll be the first complete AR I buy. I've read about the 11% federal excise tax. Is this in addition to the 8.25% sales tax that we already have to pay on gun purchases? If that's true, 19.25% tax is a pretty hefty add-on.

    Thanks for the help.

The Fed excise tax is paid by the manufacturer & then passed along to the consumer in the retail price. Yes it is a punitive anti-gun NRA supported tax from either 1938 or 1958 IIRC, in the now superseded Federal Firearms Act.

You as a consumer only have to pay all the BS CA taxes.

Excise tax will be included the price on the pricetag hanging from the gun you see in the gun store.

It really isn't an anti-gun tax. FWC is 100% funded by the excise tax as is most if not all public land management.

As a manufacturer we actually have to pay it (you don't like someone else said it is included in the price of the gun). However as a hunter I enjoy the services it pays for.

Also all ammo has that same excise tax.

I've seen these Colt models.... My only concern is that while there is a CA model etched into the receiver (since it was manufactured with a BB by a manufacturer), it still says "Colt M4 Carbine" as the model on the receiver." that makes me nervous when out an about with the possibility of uninformed LEO.

Uhh...I believe you're attempting to talk about the Pittman Robertson Act. This is truly sportsmen putting their money where their mouth is. This act is rather singularly responsible for the hunting opportunities we have today.

                  Banned Colts....

                  1) Colt AR-15 (all). The M4 is a Model designation other than AR15.
                  2) Colt Law Enforcement (6920) The 6920 isnt the same as a CA6920 and appears nowhere on the firearm.
                  3) Colt Match Target (all) The Match Target Model designation appears no where on the firearm.
                  4) Colt Sporter (all) The Sporter Model designation appears nowhere on the firearm.

Yes. I'm aware... WE know this. I refer back to what I said about "uninformed LE."

This. What it means is that sportsmen are the ones that pay for things like wildlife refuges. An interesting side note is that there was a proposal a few years ago to expand on this. There's a lot of people who benefit from what these excise taxes pay for but who don't contribute such as bird watchers, hikers, photographers, etc. The proposal was to put excise taxes on these users as well but it went nowhere. Funny how some groups are freeloaders and others bear the burden.

Personally, I don't mind if birders, hikers, etc. get to piggyback. It does piss me off when they try to badmouth hunters/sportsmen who paid for their playground. Same goes for the excise taxes on fishing gear, the license fees etc. We could use routine recognition of who actually pays for the lands and management thereof.
