    Ultrasonic Cleaning

So, as my collection is starting to grow, so has my cleaning. I do not mind cleaning my weapons, but after a full day at the range, cleaning a couple pistols, a rifle, and a shotgun, it can take some time.

If I have the time, then no problem, I get to spend some time in garage by myself and the wife leaves me alone. But most of the time, I am tired and by the time I get home, it is no the wifes turn to spend time with me.

So, I decided to give this ultrasonic cleaning thing a try. Went to harbor frieght with my 20% coupon in hand and grabbed one them 2.6qt US cleaners.

So, I completely stripped down my glock and my 686. Tried it on the barrel alone.

First thing, just plain water. It actually did a pretty good job. Not sparkling, but not bad.

Next, added a bit of simple green. Did a much better job. However after the go ahead in simple green, I rinsed it off with water as I didn't want the simple green staining. Just in case.

Next try, I poured about 1:9 ratio of MPro7 and water. This was the best combination I tried so far. Did a really good job of cleaning. Now that I was happy, I also stripped the glock completely, stripped the revolver completely, same with the marlin and the 870. I went to town. Nice thing was while the system was doing it's thing for 8 minutes at a time, I got to do other things. Like sit down and do nothing.

Does it get everything off? Not really, but does a really good job of getting to the parts that I cant. After everything was done, I rinsed off and reassembled and lubed and oil the parts that needed.

So, all that to get to my questions...

Anyone know a place locally (SF Bay Area) that actually sells some US Cleaning solution? I have some on order, but would like to try others.

I am actually tempted to try this stuff on eBay.. looks interested.. I like the fact that is has a rust inhibitor AND lube, which is kinda nice. I don't have to worry about my stuff flash rusting. Anyone every try or heard about this stuff? Not much panned out on the interwebs.

That is only for 2 gallons, I am tempted to just buy the 20 gallon mix as it is only a few bucks more... about $12 shipped for 2 gallons mix or $31 for 20 gallons mix. It is all packets of concentrate so I can just buy some distilled water and have some premixed.

Anyways, would appreciate any feedback if anyone has ever used or tried this stuff.

Yeah, I actually have some of that on order from Amazon, with Prime it is only like $21.28 shipped.

Unfortunately, it wont ship until the end of the month. Please let me know how it works for you, would love to either keep the order or cancel it.

Low price on what? Gun cleaning solution? or the US Cleaner? I already bought the cleaner from them, just was waiting for a 20% coupon..

I've got the same cleaner, it's fantastic. Really does a great job. I usually use a very well-watered solution of Simple Green. If you're doing aluminum, though, you should look into the Simple Green HD Pro - it's safer on aluminum than the regular stuff is.

Yep. I use Simple Green also and I think it works pretty good. I mix Simple Green with hot water and use it in my US cleaner from Harbor Freight. You can see the crud being blaster off. I bought if for cleaning brass but now I use it mostly for cleaning gun parts.....

So, question - once you have cleaned a complex part, say a pistol slide, how do you get it all dry? I am thinking about parts such as the firing pin channel etc.

What I've done is blow the parts out as much as I can using compressed air. Then put them in the oven on a low heat (between 212 - 250) until I'm confident any little bit of moisture would have boiled out.

Is this sufficient? Curious what the rest of you do.

I know that my Yugo M57 barrel did not get clean by ultrasonic cleaning. I still had to use a brush on it afterwards. Ultrasonic is nice, but you still need a judicious application of elbow grease.
