Incredible as it sounds, the news from NYC is that even after being hit 21 times by NYPD officers, a shooting suspect will survive.

A key statement in the news article is that

none of the bullets hit his brain, heart or major arteries. His family members say that even though his arms, legs and torso were riddled ...
Alvarez is "doing all right" and talking. It's believed he'll survive.

NYPD uses the 9mm as a sidearm, IIRC. This report tells me certain things;

1. Never underestimate the human body's ability to absorb damage and keep going.
2. It doesn't matter how many rounds you have if you can't connect with something vital.
3. No gunfight ever goes the way you think it should.
4. The larger the police department, the lower the overall marksmanship.

The bad news for the guy is that he'll survive to go on trial for murder, attempted murder of police officers, ADW against police officers and probably a dozen other charges.

The human body is an amazing machine. It has developed to withstand immense traumatic injury. It has extremely impressive self-repair and coping mechanisms.

Everyone always assumes that the shot xx times and still standing == drugs. They corroborate that by reports of criminals getting shot xx times and still standing. However what seems to fall through the media cracks are that no drugs are required for that event and nearly all the xx times events without drugs usually don't pop on the radar.

A human body in Fight mode is even more impressive than it normally is. Fight mode alterations to physiology are huge, the body goes "all in" both physically and chemically. Slow-twitch muscles come under voluntary control (super-man mode), the adrenal gland has poured the natural version of speed through the body. People in this mode won't bleed out as fast from these changes in both coagulating agents and constriction response to damage. Even a head hit might not stop them unless it causes critical failures in that system (spine shot will disconnect things however, but there are plenty of cases of people getting it right through the noggin and they keep going).

one thing everyone is forgetting also.. is that NYPD has horrible triggers in there glocks.. think in the 9lb+ range.. funny that they put a stiff trigger to stop people from getting accidentally shot, they are bandaiding a training issue.. as so many departments do.
