    M&P Pro slide release issue

Thought I'd throw my $.02 worth in just in case anyone else has had this problem/issue... I've never had this happen with any Glocks, Sigs, 1911's, Walthers, Rugers, Colts, M&Ps I've ever owned or shot over the past 40 years.

When I got my new 5" M&P Pro 9mm a month ago, I took it to the range and started shooting. On the first magazine change, the slide "automatically" released and loaded a new round in the chamber. This really concerned me due to my extensive experience with semi-autos. The "problem" continued each mag change. I had also bought a new 4.5" M&P .45 at the same time and did not have a similar problem.

I called Smith and Wesson and was told that the pistol was designed originally for LE and was designed that way. Some of the pistols have this "problem" and some don't. I told him that was a pretty lame answer (some do and some don't). Nevertheless, he said they're happy to fix the problem if you send the pistol to them. Since this goes against 40 years of training on all manner of semi-auto pistols where I use the slide lock to release the slide or rack the slide to load the bullet, I will probably send it back so they can correct this for me.

It happens to all types of pistols from all manufacturers. Some easier and more often than others.

Even if you send it back it will probably still do it if you slam the magazine hard enough.

If you train to pre-load the slide release it's not an issue.

Pretty lengthy discussion on that topic over here: MP-Pistol

I've got a FS 9mm that did it almost everytime a fresh mag went in. I had to send it back for some rust issues on the slide which was replaced along with a new slide stop. Much harder to "auto-forward" now, but it will still happen on occasion. I've just learned to change my mode of operation. Fresh mag goes in, weak hand thumb disengages the slide stop since it's basically sitting on top of it. If it "auto-forwards", I still employ the thumb to slide release to reinforce the muscle memory. If all THAT fails for some reason, then I transition to the "sling-shot" since I've more than likely got a FTF issue.

        Problem???
This is a great feature and an advantage. I teach at a police academy that uses M&Ps. The guns do this if you seat the mag hard enough on mag changes.

On my personal Glocks, this also works and I love it. It makes for quick mag changes that save you the time to have to rack the slide.

^ Yeah, I don't see it as a problem as I generally don't need to keep the slide back after mag changes....especially since I know it's prone to happen with this particular pistol. I like it!

It can be made to occur with most pistols and it is more common with polymer framed guns due to the inherent play between the slide and frame

Same here. My M&P 9mm only does it on occasion, depending on how hard i put in the fresh mag. The only thing that kinda bothers me is the consistency. I'd rather the slide go forward all the time, or stay locked until I rack the slide. Either way, it doesn't really bother me that much. I love that little pistol!

My Glock 19 does this every time as long as the mag is fairly fullm 8 or more rounds. I love the fact that it does this. One less step.
