    HA HA HA

I had a guy tell me today that he has a 30-06 and he can shoot 308 ammo though it also. This was at Turners in Fouontain valley. My buddy was picking up a XD 45. I must of had TALK TO ME tatooed on my forehead. I basically shook my head and smirked. I turned to my buddy and said are you done yet. I gotta go get some hinges from OSH

Could be, with an insert, then you need a broken case extractor to remove it. Seen one on a garand.

308 WILL fire in a '06 ....it aint good to do though...in fact- its a real BAD thing to do.......

The fact that he's proud of it......stay clear of him at the range...he's beyond a liability and livin' on borrowed time. Dont be near him.

If you have a controlled round feed action (Mauser, Winchester Model 70, etc) then the claw extractor will hold the rim to the boltface but the firing pin may or may not set off the primer because the case will try to move forward under the claw. In a pushfeed action the 308 case will just fall into the chamber and the firing pin will never reach the primer. The 308 and the 30.06 both headspace off the shoulder so the 30.06 chamber will be about 0.5" to long for the 306 cartridge.

What will work is stuffing the 308 case into the 270 win, 25.06 or the 6mm-06. The 308 bullet gets jammed into the neck of the chamber and headspaces the cartridge. When you pull the trigger the cartridge fires and the bullet gets swaged down to barrel bore diameter.

I would generally recommend against this practice.
It's really hard on the primer pockets.

I accidently gave a kid some .308 ammo for his .30-06. It is true, it will work.

Wasn't the thread about that story and the discussion of the same something like 30 pages long?

I once shot a .308 in my M1. The extractor held the round. But I would'nt do it again

I have a 308 case that I found in a hunting camp a couple years ago.
It's primer pocket was severly expanded, case head extruded into the ejector plunger hole and the case was fully formed out into either a 30-06 or 270/280 chamber.

I'd post a picture, but I am without photoshop right now...

The Navy contract rifles were re-barreled and chambered for 7.62 NATO. The first ones were with sleeves that had a propensity to pop out. I had a Navy barreled Garand at one time, I truly miss it.

I have a krieger heavy barreled in .308. The people that know say the navy .308 garands could shoot just as good.
