Not that this is a surprise to anyone but man, this reporter, Scott Johnson is an f'ing idiot.
"Gun violence accounts for roughly 30 percent of the trauma activations at Highland Hospital; most of the rest come from automobile accidents. Most of the gun violence in Oakland comes from handguns. Handguns shoot mostly low-velocity projectiles. In the olden days, when people used to fight with knives, they also tended to survive more. You can't really swing a knife very fast. Bullets fired from a handgun, however, travel about 500 feet per second. Once inside the body, they do all sorts of things."
Oh, this gem too: "But assault rifles are legal in California now, too, and they can spew out more than 10 bullets a second on average. These weapons are designed to kill people. I know: I've seen how they work in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere. Thomas agrees."
First, I'd question why they would let someone who obviously is biased against guns report on any violence topics and I'd also like to point out that this same idiot reporter is the guy whose "investigative" report also concluded that it was safer to be in a war zone than in Oakland with this story.
The data in this story is so parsed it's idiotic but the worst part is it makes the readers think that living in Oakland is more dangerous than being an American soldier in Iraq. Yes, living in Oakland is indeed dangerous -- in fact -- so dangerous that citizens should have LTC -- but it's not more dangerous than being a soldier in Iraq.
