    Wish me luck

Well, I'm about ten minutes away from taking my nephew and brother in law out shooting, and it should be interesting. My BIL is a funny guy, and as such theier family is just a little different than most. He's a school teacher, but their kids are home-schooled, so I guess my sister is a schoolteacher too. She's done a great job and the kids are very smart and accomplished, just "different".

Anyway, my BIL is very conservative and religious (some might call him a bit of a zealot) and tends to preach a little, and seems to feel that his way is the only way. He thinks the Methodist church that our family grew up in is too radical. (those crazy Methodists)

I was very surprised to find out the other night at Christmas dinner at their house that he owns a handgun. I don't think he shoots much, but I know they've gone out a time or two with friends.

My nephew has every cool Nerf gun made I think, and is very into WWII history and seems to have a pretty good knowledge of guns, and is SUPER-Excited to go today.

I think we'll have a good time, I'm just a little nervous about the 45 minute car ride. (BLM shoot) I may have to lay down the "No politics, no religion, only guy-talk" rule that I just made up.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I wish you gun safety, more than luck. Be sure that you go over and over and over, and over the gun safety rules beforehand, while shooting, while packing up, while cleaning the guns at home and while parting ways

Well everything went very well, and it turns out all that nerf and BB gun practice (he has a Red Ryder) has paid off, cuz' my nephew is a darn good shot!

His dad on the other hand, should either get some training and practice a lot more, or sell me his Glock 17. He was flinching so bad that he was hitting the ground halfway between us and the targets he was aiming for.

I gave him a couple of tips that seemed to help, and he was starting to kinda' get his bearings by the end of the day.

Safety was paramount, and I never had to stop anybody from doing anything stupid. I had given my nephew some "homework" to do on gun safety, and he actually has a DVD on gun handling safety and evidently watches vids on Youtube. I found out he loves Hickok45's videos.

We had a few malfunctions, and they both were safe, my nephew I just walked him though it with leading questions; Ok, what's the first thing you do? "Drop the magazine." Good, what's next?

My BIL preferred to just set it down and ask me what to do.

All in all a great day was had by all, and I think we've hooked a couple more.

The only casualty was my scope keeps falling off my Marlin 795!

I sure do love my new SP-01!!

Scope walking on a 795 is pretty common. Some of the folks at Rimfirecentral.com say that using a solid scope base solves this problem. Here are a couple of examples on Amazon:

Had a great time, probably not who I will shoot with every time I go but I enjoyed "Manning the kid up" a little bit, it was cool watching father & son do some guy stuff together. My nephew spends most of his time surrounded by females - dad's at work, he's home-schooled by mom and has three sisters.
