Clarification needed about steel targets ?

I'm gonna go shooting with my Dad this week sometime at Rainbow Range here near Temecula. The range says no jacketed ammo on the steel targets. So two questions here.

    1. The 500 rounds of FMJ I'm guessing is what they don't want used ?

    2. What the heck am I supposed to get to shoot at them ?

No jacketed would mean no jacketed I'm guessing. They want you to shoot lead.

I presume it is not armor steel. FMJ and most any jacketed bullet will either heavily dimple, or blow right on through. AR-500 is the norm for good steel targets that will take a beating from FMJ and jackets.

Sounds like this range only allows lead bullets on the steel.

Go a little further south to the Pala range. They have orange steel targets from 100 yards out to 880 yards you can shoot at all day long.
(unless you are shooting a 338 Lapua or larger - then there are only 2 targets to shoot at)

Thanks guys. I'm shooting my XD40 so 10 yards out is good enough.

I would like to try Pala sometime. But would this still mean I can't use the FMJ 40's at Pala either.

I'm a member at Rainbow and FMJ ammo is allowed. They don't want you using FMJ only on the steel plate rack because of the damage it causes to them. You can use whatever ammo you want on the regular handgun range. You can even bring your own steel targets (you just have to have the range master OK it before you use it).

Lead or copper washed on the plate rack. If you want to shoot the plates and you don't reload you can usually find someone at the range who will trade you a box of lead for you FMJ.
