    Phone call from CA DOJ

Wow! Received a call yesterday, concerning a Christmas gift to my son. I picked up a Rem 870, made modifications (legal) and giving to my son. Wasn't sure what the rules were about transfers, except something about money and registering. Nice lady, asked who is it for; "my son". She said I didn't need to do anything since it is blood family. Only if he wanted to do the registration to him, but not necessary. Cool, finally a govt agency that responds to questions.

Anyway we are going into the desert Christmas eve to "test" fire and have some fun. Just hope Santa isn't doing low fly-overs, hmmmm deer meat!

NOTE: For the curious, I requested info, since I wasn't getting correct information and email CA DOJ directly on the website.

The 870 doesn't have to be registered and it's not currently registered even to you.

To legally give it to your son, assuming you both live in the same state, you physically hand it to him. That's it. No FFL needed, no registration, no money, no paperwork.

I called recently to ask them about the PPT fees. It took a while. About two weeks, but they did actually call me and the guy was very helpful even if he most likely did get off the phone and do something that somehow affected by 2A rights in a negative way.

Why would you call the DOJ for anything?

Calguns is a far better and more accurate reference, and we won't even lie to you like the DOJ will. We are also better informed about Federal laws which the DOJ likes to ignore (like encouraging people to gift firearms to family across state lines, in violation of Federal firearms transfer laws).

Seriously. DONT CALL THE DOJ. Nothing good ever comes from it.

speaking of which. i have never seen anywhere that feds have a family exemption, except in the case of will or intestate succession.

and that isn't limited to just family members.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

They don't. But if you call the DOJ they'll tell you it's just fine to gift that shiny new handgun to your son in Tennessee. It's a violation of Federal law, but the DOJ doesn't care because they only concern themselves with state law.

                        Hence: DONT CALL THE DOJ.

I once called and had 3 employees loudly arguing over what was the correct answer.

I have called many times to DOJ though and gotten good info, BATFE too.

When I saw the thread title "Phone call from CA DOJ," the first thing that popped into my head was maybe they were asking why the OP had sold so many guns in this past year.
