    CERAKOTE EXPERIENCES

Thinking of getting an old glock 19 cerakoted and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it? Anyone you'd recommend that does it? Thanks from Oside.

Its hold up well, but not as well as I have been led to believe. I cerakoted my Glock 26 back in July and anywhere there is parts rubbing like the trigger or where the slide connects to the frame, I get crazy peeling and nasty looking leftover cerakote I need to clean off with a brush or something. This isnt too bad though, wipe it off and it looks fine. The MAJOR problem is on the slide where you grip it to rack. That is coming off and does not look good at all.

I dont use my G26 too much, something like maybe once every 2-3 weeks at the range. I dunno if my cerakote job was not up to standard or not, but I would not recommend unless you plan to have your firearm as a showpiece. I can try to get some example pix later if you want to see what I mean.

yikes. i can't vouch personally, but your experience sounds unique. from doing a bit of research myself when i wanted to get a slide cerakoted, it's the toughest of the spray-on coatings.

sounds like there may have been some insufficient prep work or application in your case.

In my experience it takes 140 grip Al Oxide blast media at 45psi to remove properly applied Cerakote. It should not just peel, or even come off when scrubbed on with a wire brush. Cerakote should not be affected by any cleaning solvent or oil I have ever seen, even on polymer frames such as Glock.

By properly applied I mean a complete disassembly of the part, Al Oxide blasted to create a "tooth" in the metal, completely degreased and then undisturbed cure time (oven cured or 5 days for air cure).

To protect yourself from a "guy who has a HVLP spray gun" look on NICs page for certified applicators and give them a call: http://www.nicindustries.com/applicator_search.php

Ive never had anything cerakoted so I assumed the wear was normal and the resilience of cerakoting was overstated. I had it done by a professional cerakoter so I assume they did all the necessary prep and curing. I believe my firearm was disassembled since I was charged a disassembly fee and the internals were coated. It was Phantom Finishing and you can see the G26 on their pistol gallery:

You can see the peeling on the slide here. This happened relatively early.

This is the back slide cover you can see where it was pealing (pretty much everywhere). I smoothed most of it off with a normal microfiber towel.

You can see peeling on the barrel here.

More examples of the peeling. As with the back of the slide, I tried to smooth most of it out by rubbing the peeling off with a towel. I didnt want to use anything real abrasive since I didnt want any more of the coating to come off.

Im getting the feeling this is not normal wear from the responses I got earlier. Any idea what happened?

I shill the stuff look below but get it frankh its great. I have it on my MD mossberg and am getting it on my duck gun quick here. It survives salt spray well, survives wear great. Thats not to say it wont show wear marks (my magtube shows wear from the pump slide but its still holding up). A glock should run you about $140 to get coated. HP customs and coating is my boss.

Scorpio your jobs looks like it was majorly screwed up. Was the job prepped properly, was yours oven cured or aircured, and check NIC industries to see if your coater is still listed. They slowly prune the bad ones offlooks like phantom still is and is a quality house.

Phantom, could a mix ratio of product have been off on the batch?

Scorpio. Not sure what happened there. Everything was done to spec, not sure what went wrong. Regardless, it sucks that it happened. You can send it back and have it redone or get a refund. Either way I'm sorry for your inconvenience.

Wow, if you are able to "smooth" it out with a microfiber towel, there was definitely something missed along the way.
It is interesting the low spots in the serrated area appear to be delaminating. The high spots which experience the most contact should show the greater wear. It looks like it may have just been a case of the underlying material not being cleaned/degreased sufficiently.
My limited experience with CK so far indicates it is pretty damn tough.

It is a tough coating, and if you're able to smooth it out with anything, then yoou screwed up in the prep and application. I think I posted this once before, but this is my own rifle I did maybe three years ago now and it still looks like the day I did it. Oxyde medium blast and then two light coats of Cerracote. The rifle was so easy I did my Premier Heritage scope too. Just buy the kit and go for it. It's easy. Biggest mistake I see is too much paint in one coat.

                          Hello,

Todd has contacted me and he will be taking care of this so all is well. There arent too many threads on the long term effects of cerakote so I thought my issue was normal. Most of the peeling was on areas with frequent contact with my hands or moving parts.
