New buckets from wall mart hold up better than old sun dried buckets.

The dust ploom is very rewarding at 150 yards when handgun shooting and there is nothing quite like putting an sks on a bipod and melting the handguard finish hammering a bucket filled with rocks.. ery satisfying SMACK sound as well as a "smoky" dust cloud.

I just put my name in on a tannerite buy. I am going to try tannerite @night with glow sticks as the target

I also like shooting shotgun clays put on a berm and I save large gatorade bottles and fill them with water when I get to the range for use as fodder.

bowling pins are standard fare for me. i can take 'em out within 1-2 shots with my m44 at any range within 100 yds, but i'm still having trouble compensating for the rainbow trajectory with the sks.
when more industrious, filled water bottles are fun too, whether they explode or bleed out.

i've also been fond of the shoot-n-see's as of late.

for the winter months...

fill 1 gallon milk or orange juice Cartons with water & food coloring...
put them in the freezer & create some nice colorful blocks of ice...
put them in a cooler after removing them from the cartons and head out for some fun!

no cleanup needed except for your brass.

But dirt is fun too!

Ted, try putting the tanerite into a bag of flour. The flour should produce a specetacular flash. Thanks for the heads up about shooting it at night.

i like to buy fruit that is on sale. when i shoot at burro canyon there is a mexican market on azusa that always has some oranges or grapefruits on sale real cheap. the animals take care of the clean up.

I picked up a steel "FBI Q" target from LE Targets. It works great for shooting on the move practice because you can hear your hits. The stand that can be purchased with it is simple to set up, robust and best of all it angles the bottom of the target down and back which really helps to prevent back spatter. I got the harder version which can be used for pistols and rifles. It's reversable and simple coat of spray paint makes it like new again so you can see your hits more clearly.

LE Targets sells a variety of other steel targets including swingers, poppers and IPSC silhouettes.

I know this technically still paper, but I have switched to paper plates for handgun training. They are cheap, easy to mount, give a nice sight outline, and I can see pulled shots instantly. I used to shoot windfallen oranges ( I shoot near a grove ), and they do explode satisfactorily, but I wasn't getting the feedback on shot position.

Tried this out about two and half years ago. Pretty anti-climactic. At night Tannerite produces no flash or flame visible to the naked eye, or NVD's.

Tannerite's basically a day time amusement.

I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to how tannerite works, so my main question is, why does it produce no visible flash at night?

Tannerite, like most high explosives, actually detonates so fast that a flame front is not propogated (that's the definition of an explosive, it dosen't burn, the reaction instead moves at the speed of sound in the material, usually much faster than a flame can move.) The reaction however is still chemical, and I find that some light is liberated. Very little however. Just not much time when a wave of (mostly) nitrogen is appearing at over 7,000METERS/second !!!

Interesting that there's no visible flash in NDVs, as there is also some thermal component to a tannerite explosion. However the residual is not usually enough to set anything on fire (even thin paper) so fast is the VOD.
