Give up guns, get a gift card

Really? I briefly saw/heard this on the news this morning while headed off to work so I didn't catch most of it. I decided to google it and I found it very disturbing. Which got me thinking. If it's happening in San Diego, are there similar events elsewhere?

"We want to try to get guns from out of houses. People are burglarizing houses, and there have been a lot of home invasions lately. They find the gun, the gun hits the street, then someone gets killed."
Seriously? Crime is going up and they want to disarm law abiding citizens? I agree with some of the comments. One commenter got me thinking: Most of the uninformed would be breaking transport laws not to mention they'll be in a GFSZ with a handgun, so that's trouble waiting to happen.

yeah, that's how these buy-back programs work and they've been going on for years(at least the 80's as far back as I remember)

There is some exemption somewhere in the PC(can't remember exactly, but it's been brought up before in buyback threads) regarding the transport of a gun to LEO for the purpose of getting rid of it. There is also something in there about why LEO doesn't get in trouble for transferring firearms via buybacks without going through an FFL.

Every few weeks you also see people posting pictures of LEO posing while tossing guns into a furnace and then people pointing out that some of those guns are worth hundreds(and thousands in a few instances) of dollars.

Yikes, the logic, or actually, the lack of logic is astounding.

              From the article:

“We want to try to get guns from out of houses. People are burglarizing houses, and there have been a lot of home invasions lately...."

Actually I'm waiting for one of these to happen in OC.

WAIT. Before you flame me. I have a broken POS AR7 that I don't want to fix and I hate it. I'd give it up for cash. I tried selling it here to a member cheap but he didn't want the headache either.

I wonder if they'd consider it an assault rifle and I'd get $200. If they didn't I'd act all ignorant and claim it was until they gave in or threaten to take it back home with me. $200 would be more than I paid for it over 14 years ago. F the system baby.

Tax dollars at work. Brilliant! They want them out of the house because they want you to call 911. Ask the burglar to wait until the police show up.

There was a calgunner who did that and apparently managed to score a good deal on a shotgun a while back(I think it was pullinshoot?).

This is the first one of these that I have seen where they actually state that the firearm must be operable.

"Gun owners can turn in their operable weapons from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday..."

I wonder if they are going to "ops check" the firearms before giving out the gift cards.

The best part about the gun buy-back is that it is across the street from an elementary school. I went a few years ago to get some pictures of what was turned in.

I think they got tired of gun shops using them to get rid of the junk in their inventory, heh(I remember seeing a link to at least 1 report of that happening with a trunk load of junk that had piled up over the years). Not to mention the idea(that's also been passed around this forum before) of getting some sheet metal and making "ak flats" and handing those in by the dozen.

Only thing good that can come of this is if the crooks that stole my guns show up and cash them in. Anyone know if all the firearms turned in are inspected for crimes etc?
