I was planning on selling my shotgun but when I met up with the person he told me that he didn't want to do it through an FFL. I told him no and his reasoning was that he doesn't want to pay the fees. I told him there is only the $25 DROS fee and $10 transfer fee but he told me that there was a $70 holding fee and a couple more fees that he would have to pay. I walked away from the deal but was wondering are there others fees that I do not know about. This is the first gun that I am selling through a private party but my research told me that the fee should only be $35 ($25 DROS + $10 dealer fee). Am I right?

I have no idea where your potential buyer got the idea of other fees; you have it right.

But it is state law that such a transfer goes through an FFL; if the buyer doesn't want to do that, you did the right thing to walk away.

"Transfer" fee is a charge (unregulated) for the transfer of a weapon from FFL to FFL , not a PPT. Think of buying a gun from Bud's and transfering to an FFL near you.

Ask about PPT fee's and you should hear $35.00 total.

Shouldn't - keeping the gun for 10 days is not your idea, it's part of the requirements of the law.

After 30 days (when you would have to re-DROS) would not be entirely unreasonable.

There are FFLs that charge storage fees for every day after the 11th.

those outrageous fees only apply when you are mailing it to his FFL, not local PPT. I had to pay that when I bought a gun on-line and they have to ship it from a different state to my FFL in San Diego.

Are you saying that because you figure once you get to the shop it won't be over $35 or are you saying that because you plan on paying it? If you plan on paying it, that is absurd. No way am I going to lose money on a sale because of an illegal PPT charge.

Yup. Glib, off-the-cuff remark without thinking it through.

But, you're right, I meant that I would not expect the FFL to charge over $35. And, now that I'm thinking it through, I would call the FFL and make sure he was in compliance before making that offer.
