In two weeks, I will be buying my very first handgun. I have a lock box/ safe already for it and I know that I still need a gun lock also. The question I have is, where I should get one and how much should I be looking at? I have heard horror stories of stores charging 10-18 bucks for a stupid lock and I do not want to be screwed. Also, I heard about the police stations giving out free ones? Can anyone confirm this? I would search myself but iphone + useless search bar doesn't work well lol.

I thought if you had the receipt for the safe you were good to go.

Cool thanks man. I will pm you.
I dont have a receipt. It was a gift from my ex brother in law when he sold his handguns.
I am buying a used one from another calgunner here and I was told that if the gun came with one, I would still have to purchase another.Originally posted by ibanezfooFallout isn't just a game, its for training.

just buy one at wal-mart or wherever before picking up the gun, then just return the lock after picking up the gun.
that is unless you want to keep it.Originally posted by leelawBecause -ohmigosh- they can add their opinions, too?Originally posted by SoCalSig1911Preppers canceled my order this afternoon because I called them a disgrace... I just did a PPT and threw in my old lock with the gun... The FFL was ok with that and didn't force the buyer to purchase a lock since it 'came with one'. Your mileage may vary...
I don't think the cops are giving any freebies anymore. And even if you had one it wouldn't work since you need a receipt (no receipt since they were free)

Pretty sure at least some departments are still giving them away, and some shops will accept a dated business card as a receipt for those(shows you were at least there on that date when you got the thing, and if they really need to check you were likely on camera at the counter when you picked it up).I just did a PPT and threw in my old lock with the gun... But that requires the shop to have some sense, there are shops run by idiots who won't accept a a lock included in a PPT that came with the gun when it was new and is still in it's plastic wrapper being sold with it.
There are other shops that have a stash of used locks that they sell and buy for $1.Comment

Here's the situation:
For all firearm purchases, CA requires a gun lock when the gun leaves the shop.
CA says the 'safe affidavit' covers that.
If you choose to use a gun lock, CA requires that the lock have been purchased in the 30 days prior to the delivery of the gun.
FEDERAL law requires a 'safety device' for handguns. There is no Federal equivalent for the 'safe affidavit' and BATFE will not accept the CA version.
SO, practically speaking, buyers need a gun lock for handguns - and CA FFLs must use CA law, so both the 30-day limit and the 'on the safety device roster' requirements apply.
Neither CA nor Federal law require a buyer to keep or use those locks. CA law require that any lock labeled 'gun lock' must be on the roster of safety devices.
So the obvious work-around is to drop in to Walmart or wherever, buy a gun lock, present the UNOPENED lock and receipt to the FFL, who will 'check the box' for gun lock, to satisfy both CA and the Feds, and then deliver the gun. THEN, the buyer takes the receipt and the lock back to the place of purchase, and returns the lock.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
