    air guns

my wife and i watched a segment of "Alaska Troopers" a few days ago.

on this episode a female Moose was allegedly shot and killed with a break-barrel air rifle.

there was no detail given but from what i saw, it was a Gamo or Crosman (probably a nitro piston) with a scope/flashlite/laser combo mounted. I'm not certain but it may have been a .25 caliber.

they gave no details about the rifle(s) used. there was the suggestion that there were approximately 10 shots fired at the cow.

there were three persons involved (and there were possibly more rifles involved) but the intimation is that the moose was taken with the single shot (or shots) from the air rifle(s).

Well, air guns these days can easily push a .25 caliber 25-30 grain pellet 1000 or more fps.

The critter must have suffered with each shot. There's a guy on the internets who takes Buffalo with a 50 cal compressed air gun.

True, but theirs probably wasn't the modern day equivalent of $130 though. Also the hand pump for those girandoni rifles took 1500 strokes, I'm talking about breaking the action once and then closing it.

          Not quite the same thing.

I guess , but for 1200 strokes they could fire at least 50 times and gas a mag the held like 20 balls.

My point was if there was a rifle that long ago with those capabilities, I'm sure there are some mean air rifles out now days.

Yep, L&C had a +/-40 cal repeater. The nearest we have to that today is the Benjamen Rouge which lists at $1500 plus pump and other accesories. That's only a .357 bore and not a .40 bore. Other big bore guns I'm aware of are not repeaters.

Plus, the other big bore guns don't get 20-30 shots(usable) a fill either. It's more like 8-15 for the .40-.50 cal models and even those run $600+.

Pyrmydair has a chrono listing for shots out of a .50 cal 2 tank single shot PCP gun for $600, http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Dragon...fle/2500#sSpec

                Shot No. 1: 653 fps
                Shot No. 2: 667 fps
                Shot No. 3: 643 fps
                Shot No. 4: 634 fps
                Shot No. 5: 620 fps
                Shot No. 6: 601 fps
                Shot No. 7: 576 fps
                Shot No. 8: 581 fps
                Shot No. 9: 544 fps
                Shot No. 10: 521 fps
                Shot No. 11: 490 fps
                Shot No. 12: 454 fps
                Shot No. 13: 453 fps
                Shot No. 14: 420 fps
                Shot No. 15: 388 fps
                Shot No. 16: 350 fps
                Shot No. 17: 258 fps

That gets pretty low. Compare that to a much cheaper, albeit smaller caliber break action and you get roughly the same FPS every shot. Even the Rogue in .357 is only 20 shots a charge with a capacity of 6. Now those modern PCP guns can obviously be recharged much quicker using small scuba tanks, but those aren't cheap either and still need to be filled(and periodically hydrotested, and replaced after their condemn date).

The thing is, I've never read what the actual chrono readings from a girandoni are, it would be interesting to compare.

Advertising hype aside, you'll never see velocities like that with a break barrel spring gun in .25 caliber.
