I have seen it done at gun shows and I think it would be a fun thing to do. The law on it, California Penal Code section 320.5, is, of course, written for lawyers. Has anyone here ever run a rifle raffle or been involved in one? I want to know about the reporting requirements and how you were set up with a charity. Thanks!

I know there are a couple members on here who have and do still host NRA fundraiser dinners, and they raffle off quite a few firearms. I can't remember who it was that organizes them but I am sure you can do a search on here and find out.sigpicComment

there's serious issues with doing a raffle.
these are from memory, i'm not a lawyer
raffle is in essence gambling if it has an entry fee.
gambling needs a license (state and fed i think), and city/county permits where applicable
the exemptions are with non-profit 501c.3 type orgs
a company cannot require a purchase be made to gain entry to the raffle
the entry must be free and require no purchase (except maybe a stamp for the envelope)
I'm not sure if something like the thing kestryl did with the 1911 giveaway falls under the same guidlelines or not, but it probably does/did, as there was an entry method, that was no cost. i am not familiar with how calguns is organized so dont know what he actually had to go through to be legal
might wanna talk with kestryl about that
but, then non-profits are exempt, i dont recall how it works though, i think its a fed regulation that exempts non-profits from needing to meet certain requirements for gambling or raffles.
what are you trying to do, just run your own raffle, or raffle a firearm for a 'cause'Comment

In any type of fight, & especially gun fights, there are no winners ..... just varying degrees of losers. The only fight you win is the one you never get into.

Burro Canyon has one happening either the 4th or 5th. Have a bunch of tickets in it.

TURNING and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
