PPT - how does it work?

Ok so I'm sure this question comes up all the time but I cant seem to find exactly what im looking for in a google search.

So say i want to buy a handgun from someone on the marketplace, how does it work? do you physically meet the person with an FFL or does the seller send the gun to the ffl then I pay the money and the additional fees then the FFL sends the payment to the seller?

Either way.

If you are local, meet them at a gun shop.
$35 for the transfer and DROS is the legal limit.
You may need an HSC ($25) and a lock ($5-$15).

If you are not local, you make arrangements with your local gun shop to receive the gun. If they will receive from a private individual, then the seller ships to them directly, if not, the seller goes to his FFL and they ship it to yours.

The latter is not legally a PPT. It is an FFL transfer and the gun must be on the California Safe Handgun Roster.

Also, if you aren't local and don't meet in person, it is customary to send your money before they send the gun. Your FFL doesn't handle sending the money to the seller, just the money he charges for the transfer and the DROS fees
