    Need Sacto Gun Smith Recommendation

I was out to dinner with a friend tonight and he is having trouble with his beretta shotgun.

I offered to take a look, but he says "no big deal, I'll just take it to a smith"

So - Who is good in the sacto area and is a "real" gunsmith....

    Steve

PS - friend is a shooter and has always had armorers to fall back on = but is now retired and lost touch with those guys.

Shoot - I have got to read before I hit send....

      I have a beretta - - -

his is a Benelli M3 - thinks firing pin is broken - won't fire, no indent in primer - - happened after we were out shooting 00 buck & slugs last time.

I offered to break it down, but he didn't seemed interested. I mean really - how hard is it to pull the bolt and break it down???

So - who is local and good?

      Thanks

      Steve

I have been to J&G twice for mechanical help with a gun. In one case the gun was kept for six months, and all suggestions for how to fix the issue were refused saying "we don't do that". He apparently knows how to swap a barrel, anything more than that appears to be "out of his league". The other occasion two screws were requested to fit the factory tapped holes in a 60's Marlin receiver - the screws did not fit. Two tries, zero help, won't be wasting my time there again.

Right now I'm trying to contact Maraviov. Who apparently doesn't answer the phone or have a shop open on weekends.

You've heard the refrain, Good, Fast, Cheap...pick two?

In gunsmithing, it is usually Pick One

You'll be waiting...at least in my experience. I took a rifle in for a cleaning once upon a time. "Yeah, it'll be about 3 days." A month later, he was in shock that I was there to pick up the uncleaned and untouched rifle...that was out on the shelf with the rifles for sale with a similar tag on it, covered in dust (i.e.- dirtier than when I brought it in). No idea who could have possibly come in and been allowed to hold it. He shoved the rifle into my hands and walked back around the counter to the back without saying another word.
I put it in its case, left, and haven't thought twice about going back. If it was this big of a hassle to get a gun cleaned, I can only image having a gun worked on.

Maraviov did one gun for me and it was expensive and really did not solve the problem. He was not that fast either and it was a 60 mile ride for me one way. I know he was not in love with Norse Armory around the corner and maybe it impacted his customer service. I never went back. J&G was not that great on a 40 caliber that was not feeding well but he did not charge me for looking at it so I can't complain about that part of it. I have not heard of a reliable gunsmith within a hour of Sacramento for a couple of years now but if there is one I would love to know the name. Good luck.

I would still recommend Gary Thiry @ Just Guns off Watt & Auburn. He's been around for a really long time. Can't be around that long if you do crap work or have bad service. What he doesn't do or don't do any longer, he'll tell ya. Doesn't cost anything to give him a call. My friends and I have had alot of work done from him over the years and never had a problem with him, his service, or his work.

Ultimately, there are going to be negative reviews on just about any business. The trick is finding the ones that are good almost all of the time.
