    Cow Mountain Shooting Range?????

Going camping near Cow Mountian with some friends and heard there is a gun range there. None of us have been so I want to know what to expect from anyone that has been there, and i also need to know what the access roads are like. I'll be driving up in a honda civic and if i need to leave my car in Ukiah and ride in with a buddy because the roads are bad or 4x4 only then I will. I'm not worried about a bumpy dirt road.....that was 50% or more of the roads i grew up driving in Mariposa with a car that had less clearance than this one....but i want a heads up on what we're getting into before we get there so we can plan accordingly.

    thanks

A Honda Civic MIGHT make it there this time of year. There's usually a lot of crap laying around up there to plink at if you don't bring targets. Get there early to avoid any Yahoos. Please pick up after yourself.
This is my daughter shooting there.

Just be sure to stake your place early Saturday morning ~before 10am because then hoards of people show up - usually consuming several adult beverages.

Cow Mountain is a BLM, you can shoot almost anywhere there as long as you follow the rules.

Careful if roads are closed due to the rain. They lock gates and don't allow motor vehicles in in the winter. Not sure if that's happened yet.

Yeah if it even remotely has rained in 24 hours, call them to check and see if they're open. I can't tell you how many times I've had a 4x4 trip planned up there only to have it canceled at the last minute due to some random precipitation

Cow Mountain has a reputation. It was closed in the past because of trash and "incidents". The last time I was there some jerk walked down range during a cease fire and, while walking back to firing line, pulled out a pistol and started firing cross range. We left.

so.....made it to the campground. If i had anymore weight in the car I might not have though. Had to leave saturday after shooting because the rain came earlier than expected and the roads got pretty muddy. Didn't want to risk not being able to get out after several more hours of rain so i threw my tire chains on and BARELY made it out! The range was pretty filthy unfortunately. We cleaned up what we brought but didn't have much room to grab anything else. It would definitely be a hard thing to make happen, but that range would benefit from a calguns cleanup. It's a nice range, too bad people aren't very respectful.

On the bright side though the shooting was excellent! i was hitting a 18" steel plate at 50yd with my GLOCK 23, my buddy brought his AR and his Rem700 300win mag which were a blast, another buddy brought his Sig229 which i got to dual wield with my G23 for S&G's, and i tee'd off a few golf balls for skeet practice. aside from the downpour, it was a good day.

IrishPirate if you want to plan a cleanup I'd be happy to pitch in. Maybe sometime this spring?
