Hoppe's Bore Snake and an AR15

So I'm going thru my rifles after a plinking/training session with my cousin who's a Combat Controller and since I couldn't find my traditional cleaning rods since our last move I used my .22 caliber bore snake on my AR. Well at least I tried.
I removed the upper, sprayed some cleaner and oil on the snake and dropped it down the barrel. I started pulling it thru and it got stuck. I wrapped the cord around my foot and pulled on the rifle and it just wouldn't budge. I tried to back it out and nothing. It was stuck..... bad. Then I tied the cord to a shelf I built into the wall and pulled hard on the rifle and the cordage broke. I had to open up the loop of the snake on my foot and yanked. It finally came out but what a pain. I've been using Bore Snakes for sometime and have one for all my rifle calibers. This is the only time I've ever had an issue with them. I also think it's the only time I used it on the AR. Anyone else have any experiences with the Bore Snake and an AR?

I have never had a problem with a bore snake used on a AR-15.
Uppers used on JSE, Bushmaster, Colt sand JP.

Maybe the wrong size bore snake. My .22 bore snake works fine in every .22 gun I own, my AR's included.

My .22 rifle length bore snake works fine in my 15-22, and also works good in my 5.56 barrel AR.

I usually only dip a small section of it in Hoppe's 9 (a little of that stuff goes a long way) and pull it through the gun 2 or 3 times until I'm satisfied with the results.

your lucky it didnt break off and get stuck.
believe it or not that happens alot to M4's and M16's my buddy is an armorer and has had a few that caused damage to some barrels.

i have a few and love them, just be careful if they get stuck stop and try again. alot of people misuse them and they get stuck.

Never had it get stuck but I noticed my Hoppes snake has some type of metal insert that attracts a magnet so I only use it on the 10/22 now.

Could you have used (or been sold) a boresnake for the 25-06 / 270 calibers? I have both and the .22/.223 works great on AR's and .22's. But I tried pulling the 270 snake into a .22 revolver once as a test (figured it would be the easiest to remove if it got stuck or broke) but there was no way it was going through. Hard to imagine that .05 of an inch makes a difference in something soft like a snake, but it definitely does.

I had some difficulty on my M&P 15 as well. It was a hoppes as well. It didn't break off thankfully but I had to pull on it pretty darn hard to get it through. Once the metal bristles break in it gets easier. I notice on the third pass it was significantly less drag.

Perhaps you waited to long to clean the barrel?

Mine got stuck because I went in through the muzzle and not the breech.
Once I corrected that, it's been great since. I just stick a few drops of solvent on the first inch of braid and run it through twice, then a few drops of CLP on the loop and one more time through. Every few times I use the snake I clean it with a soak in hot water and 409.

That makes no sense at all.

What is your logic that you should use it on an easier-to-ruin barrel (10/22)?

The metal insert is probably just the steel cable that they use to wind the bronze bristles around in the brush part. It's certainly never going to contact any part of the barrel. And again, if you're worried about "metal" in your barrel, why on earth would you use it on a 10/22 barrel which are far easier to ruin through over-cleaning than an AR15 barrel?

Nope, no issues with a boresnake on my AR. maybe a lil tough to pull through, but it's never gotten stuck.

hope you can get it out without any damage to your rifle

If it sticks again get a wood dowl and tap so it pushes the bore snake out.
