How can we make these gun legally his?

Hey Guys,

My father was given 3 handguns about 7 years ago by a friend that was moving out of the country. (No suspision of guns being used in any type of felony) First: is a 1970 H&R Model 929 Sidekick .22 serial AG99XX, Second: is Colt 357 CTG (unknown model) serial # 1334X and Third: is Beretta Jetfire Model 950 B-Cal .25 serial B464XX.
My question is how can he legally own these guns or register them? He did not purchase them as they were a gift. He can't go to a FFL because the guy is out of the country. (Yes, he should have done the FFL before the guy left but he didn't understand the law, he's 62 )
Can he just fill out the FD4542A and send $19 for each gun?

Any info on making these gun his would be greatly appreciated. Also, any info on the guns above would be helpful.

Happens often enough.

The general run of opinion here is that we think the State is interested in getting the information that gun X belongs to person Y, and that filing that form in such cases addresses that interest.

We do NOT know for certain that it cures the misdemeanor transfer-without-FFL from PC 12082. We do NOT know whether the State is interested in prosecuting such errors.

We have heard back on no anecdotes or occasions when the question has been asked here.
