Is it Ca legal to carry a rifle in the

back seat of my Nissan Titan crew cab truck?

I would carry it unloaded, behind the seat (maybe cable locked), in a rifle case.

Here's a pic from Google of my titans crew cab back seats.

I'm thinking about maybe carrying something in the truck for emergencies.

Also (lets say) during a traffic stop, does the law say you have to inform the officer about what you have back there.

In AZ you have to tell the officer when you are carrying. So do the same rules apply.

You still have the GFSZ to deal with
California CCW would exempt a handgun from this law. Contrary to California law regarding transport of long guns, this Federal law requires long guns to be "in a locked container, or a locked firearms rack that is on a motor vehicle".

      Correct.

Federally, it must be in a locked container or a locking gun rack when within 1000ft of a school.

California law does not require anything beyond it being unloaded.

Give the cable lock to a biker for his helmet... it has no legal use on a gun once you walk out of the gun store with it.

Going by the title of the thread...

He only has to worry about the Federal GFZ. CA GFZ is only concerned with handguns. Federal requires any firearm to be in a case.

The officer is allowed to do an e-check of the rifle.

btw, I have a pickup. Whenever I transport anything I keep it in a hard airline case...just to be on the safe side.

You need to change your upholstery. See 12025 (a) (B) 350.

thats a joke of some kind, I just can't understand it... 12025 only deals with pistols, handguns and other firearms capable to be concealed on a person. A rifle doesn't fall into those categories.

You do not have to inform the officer if he doesn't ask. If you do tell them they interpret an "e" check to give them the right of inspecting it...which its really doesn't and will not hold up in court if challenged. You would still get arrested if it was loaded and probably get convicted even if its not a 100% legal law.

Do you have any prescription drugs in the car?
                  Well yes, my birth control.
Please give it to me, I need to call the Pharmacy to see if it was really issued to you.

Its illegal to ingest or have in your possession prescription drugs issued to another person. Thats doesn't give LEO the right to "check" on it unless they suspect wrong doing.

The same is true for an "e" check. Its meant to allow LEO the right to inspect the firearms carried by person suspected of crimes. It not there to give them a reason to search a car or as a way to inspect firearms.... its just used that way by some LEO.

There is no reason you can not drive around with a rifle in a locked case in your car. the locked case is a fed requirement in school zones as was stated by several people. Other than in a GFSZ, it can be unloaded on the seat next to you in plain sight with a loaded magazine next to it.... heck the loaded magazine can be in a Redi-Mag holder attached to the AR15.

...wow, I'd never thought of that before. I've got plenty of cable locks and my bike doesn't have a helmet lock, you just made my life easier.

I use cable locks on my Harley helmets all the time, they work great.
Uh OH, wait, did I just highjack the rifle thread? Damn!

dieselpower, I don't keep anything that may further a search in the truck. Thank you for all the information.

let me explain with my story.....

many many moons ago..., Oxnard CA. I was never given a reason why I was pulled over....

LEO- Are there any drugs or weapons in the car?
Me- I have some rifles in the trunk, I am just coming back from the range.
LEO- Get out of the car. Stand over there. Give me the keys. Don't make any sudden moves.
LEO opens the trunk, sees several AR15s, several SKSs, a shotgun or two and my pistol cases.
LEO- Turn around and place your hands on your head. Do it now.
I get cuffed and sat on the curb.
For the next few hours every LEO in 100,000,000 miles comes by, gets out of their cruiser, looks at the rifles & asks the same questions of me. Are those registered...are they machine guns... are they stolen from the Military...blah blah blah. My car is searched 2 or 3 times. After several hours I am told to have a nice day.

As I said... SOME LEO use the "e" check as a reason to search... its not your option to allow " a search in the truck". The rifle is the reason to search in some LEO minds.

The one drawback is that pretty much any gun owner could snag your lid since the cable locks almost always use the same key.

OTOH, in 6 years I've never lost a lid and at the most, I'll put it in my trunk if the bike will be out of sight.
