    2007 Creedmoor Cup summary

I blogged each day of my trip to Phoenix for the Creedmoor Cup:

    Day 0
    Day 1
    Day 2
    Day 3

Pictures from Day 1 and Day 3

My performance was a bit disappointing, especially during the EIC match (Day 1). I shot an 89 in standing to start the day, but I usually recover. Unfortunately, my 300 yard rapid score was an 89-0x due to a poor wind call and bad elevation zero (which should have been correct according to yesterday's practice match). Those two 89's pretty much killed my changes to get some LEG points. I tried to salvage what I could at 600, but the 191 wasn't enough. That 191 could have easily been a 195 if it weren't for a couple of bad holds in my last two shots (19 and 20 were 8's).

Ben Avery Shooting Facility is an excellent facility for all shooting. Their public firing line is nice and the have a playground for the kids and a nice activities center next to a big RV campground. The HP range was in good condition and the target butts were easy to operate (cantilever system). If you get the opportunity, go shoot a HP/long range/Palma match at Ben Avery.

There were a lot of good shooters including the USAMU. I got squaded with Sergeant Brandon Green during the EIC match. I knew he was a good shooter from what I've read online (Camp Perry), but talking to him and watching him shoot was even better. He's a very nice person. He's not arrogant and gave good insight and advice to everyone that asked him for questions in the pits.

Lots of Californian HP shooters were there and I saw a lot of familiar faces from the Camp Pendleton matches (both Marines and civilians), and people from the Central and NorCal area, including the Grizzlies junior shooters.

I'm definitely going to reassess my standing position. It has been really inconsistent as of late. The lowest score I've posted in standing this year has been 89%, but the highest has only been 95.5%, and it hovers right around 93%. I want to get it consistently at or above 96% next year and eliminate all 8's.

I plan on shooting the 29 Palms Regional, so we'll see if I can work out some bugs there.

Here's a few pics from the 300 yard line:

Ben Avery has some really squirrelly wind later in the day. After trying to group test during Thursday's practice match, I realized the wind flags were worthless. On both Fri and Sat, the mirage would change directions as well as boil during my slow prone strings. I ended up taking a long time to shoot during the EIC on Friday during slow prone. There was one period where I waited about 4 minutes for a boil to end and the mirage to start moving the way it was before, before breaking my next shot. I did use some favoring on the target, but during that one instance, I didn't want to favor one side of the target because I was afraid the mirage was going to start moving to the opposite direction than it was moving prior to the boil (because it had before and I shot a wide 8 in the process).

This was the best group I personally saw during the Cup:

200 yard sitting rapid, 2nd string. I don't know who shot it, but it was whoever was on firing point 69, relay 1 during the Saturday Creedmoor Cup 80 round match.

The King of rapid sitting is still Dennis Demille who still holds the record of 200-28x (200-20x with a shootoff string of 100-8x).

Demille's 200-20x target was on the cover of Creedmoor's catalog sometime last year, wasn't it?

Here are some pictures from earlier in the week (CMP Western Games), including the campsites, before and after the number boards blew over, snake in the campsite, public range lit at night ... fun time

I wanted to shoot the CMP Games earlier in the week, but it being in Phoenix now, I can't really justify staying the whole week.

Here is the link to CMP page with final results from the Western Games. As usual some darn good "no-excuses' shooting at the top.

Can anyone answer if the LEG points go to the top 10% PER CLASSIFACTION ? or just overall top 10% ?

Only the top 10% of non-distinguished shooters. EIC does not recognize NRA classification.
