I’ve seen something similar. Out-of-control turrets are nothing new in the defense industry. Normally this kind of stuff happens on prototype systems but every once in a while, we see odd stuff in a fielded and type classified system.
In 2006 I went to the NDIA Small Arms Conference. During the firing demonstration, a TALON SWORDS was supposed to engage some up close targets, drive over to a few meters to the left, and then engage some long range targets. The operator lost control almost immediately and the system pivot steered its loaded and charged M249 into the crowd. It was absolute pandemonium with people running or hitting the dirt. It rotated about 220 degrees before the guy from FN jumped it, flipped open the cover and wrenched out the ammo belt. At the time, SWORDS was already fielded in Iraq are more were being ordered.
When I emailed my report back to the office that night, our turret manager's email reply was something to the effect of "It happens. Welcome to the club."
As systems become more complex and autonomous, the probability of this happening goes up.Comment
