    spotting scope

Currently i have a spotting a barska 20*60. Its water proof and fog proof. Its not very good especially when i zoom it all the way to 60 for 100yrds. The fov is crap and if u plan on shooting further than that forget about it. I should of bought the bushnell version even the zoom wasent as good but better quality.
Well im lookin to upgrade. Not trying to spend a lot for a spotting scope. Any ideas on a decent brand. Big5 is pretty limited.

Even the bushnell version in the same pricerange as the barska won't be much better. If you want great glass you have to pay for it. My barska spotting scope works at 100 yards, but I can see the holes in the same target better if I turn the leupold scope on my .308 up to 7x or so(the max on it is 14, but I don't need necessarily need to set it to the max).

I use a Konus 80 and have found it to be a very good value. It's popular among high power shooters who can't quite yet get themselves to buy a Kowa.

I'll second this...Its by no means the best scope out there, but for those who don't want to break the bank on a spotter (and don't want junk either), its a great value. Definitely one of the better performers in its price class. I am pleased with mine. The tripod it comes with is crap though...

I use Kowa TSN 821 with 27X Long Eye Relief lens for my high power shooting. I can see 30 caliber bullet holes at 300 yards.

First step would be to stop shopping for a spotting scope at Big 5.

Go stop by a birding store and look through a bunch of different models. Then decide how much you want to spend.

For what it's worth, the Konus is VERY good for low little you pay for it. Excellent eye relief, and it resolves damn well for the price.

Good glass ain't cheap. Good glass also can't be found at Big 5.

Think of it as a investment, Kowa is THE scope for high power shooters...

I have a Vixen (Kowa OEM Lookalike)

You get what you pay for, check on plastic vs glass lens, where assembled (China is not good ) Go online and google the review for the brand you are looking for...

I plan to get a Kowa...but with a Vixen already and a SWAROVSKI Scope as well...kinda covered it...

Go for the higher quality, you will never regret it!

I agree buy quality and aim toward investing a good one, but if the pockets dont allow then I say go for it Ya is a Barska but if you can see it should be good for now!

How far are you wanting to shoot should be the first question. If you only want to punch paper at 100yds, and have a scope on your rifle, no sense in having a spotting scope. If you want to go further, just learn to read trace and save the money for ammo. If you have acces to a place that will let you punch steel, get a couple ar500 plates, paint them white, and you wont need a spotting scope, lots of ways of getting around buying one.

having re-thought my scope snobbery. check out Konus. Go to http://www.jarheadtop.com/Products.htm the high power guru. he sells Kowas AND Konus. read the reviews...

I may break down and buy one just to try it...

As of now i don't plan on shooting no further than 100yrds. But i would like to invest in a decent scope so if and when i do shot further out i will have a decent spotting scope in hand.

If you plan on only shooting @ 100yds, SAVE YOUR MONEY! For some reason gun people (us) think that we need to spend all this money on **** just to shoot. We dont. Dont get lost in the maze of buying all the latest and greatest and this gadget and that. Take the money you would use to buy a spotting scope, and buy a higher end scope for your rifle, mil/mil or moa/moa, good glass, reliable tracking etched reticle etc. Your going to do more with a higher end scope on your rifle, putting rounds down range, than you will with a nice spotting scope. Like I suggest, learn to watch for trace and your splash. Shoot steel that is painted white if you can. At 18x I can see an impact from a 308win at 708yds on a steel plate. The good thing about shooting swinging steel, their is no ifs ands or buts, if you hit it, it makes a noise and moves if you miss it doesnt do ****. Spotting scopes are REALLY overrated, unless you are competing stay away, buy more ammo or componets to make ammo.

                          Good Luck

I have tried to find an Internet site that tests a number of scopes that are in a price range somewhat above $500 with no success. I would like to know how the Leupold Kenai 80mm compares to a Kowa, or some others in the under $1,000 range. No doubt there is quality at $2,000+ but where do you need that kind of glass?

I have a konus as well and love it for the price. I use it for hunting, shooting, birding and star gazing. It has clear glass and sturdy. I also agree that the tripod is crap I quickly bought another.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I had to.
