    Shooting without hearing protection

    I always use hearing protection when firing high caliber rifles, or any handgun, but never do when I fire .22's

    Occasionally when me and my brothers go shooting we will shoot the first round off with no hearing protection (usually a .380). I don't know why, it always just happens.

    is this REALLY stupid? ringing usually only lasts about 2 minutes.

    What do you think?

    My uncle was telling me .22 is high pitched and can still damage your hearing.

    when your ear rings that is because you damaged hearing fibers!

      Yes it's stupid. Hearing damage is gradual and builds up over time. Just because the ringing goes away after a couple of minutes, doesn't mean that no damage was done. Keep up that habit and it might take an hour for the ringing to go away in a few years. You could end up with hearing loss, or tinnitus .

        That's what I thought.


        Just didn't know if it mattered with say a little .380 vs 30-06

        and is the .22 safe to shoot with no hearing protection?

          It's probably not as bad, but without a suppressor I'd still keep my hearing protection on as even a .22 can be pretty loud(unless we're talking about those sub sonic rounds or something).

          Learn to pay more attention when you're going shooting. I'm not sure why it's a habit for you and your brother to not have hearing protection on, but it should be a habit to check to see that people have it on.

            Even a 22 outdoors is not safe to shoot w/o hearing protection.

            As you get older, you will miss the days when you could hear people over the television.

            Hearing loss is a power thing (loud noise at short impulse = lower db noise at longer duration) - kills the cillia in the cochlea and they never grow back. Lots of farmers / construction guys / factory guys are nearly deaf from much lower dB levels of noise, but over a longer period of time.

            Do what you want.

              Try this either u or ur bro wear hearing protection and see how bad ur hearing gets over time. Then u will know if its bad or not that bad

                On the off chance that the OP is asking a serious question, the answer is that it is safer than the larger calibers. It is, however, super easy to protect yourself (think seatbelts............but maybe you don't use those either).

                I know many old timers who did not use ear protection in situations like this:



                And came through fine. Others are as deaf as Helen Keller. YMMV.

                    Yeah, I didn't think the .22LR was all that load at all... it doesn't cause any ringing, sounds more like a BB Gun.


                    Yeah I remember the one day I went to the local plinking range with no hearing protection... Every few seconds someone would fire something off and none of us would be covering our ears. lol

                      do whatever you want as conditions permit. at the range, ill wear plugs, anywhere else its a maybe.

                          I've had six months of Lady Gaga at full volume through my headphones at work.
