How often do gun dealers get robbed during normal business hours?

Today I was in a Bay Area shop for ammo and a kid behind the counter was wearing a 1911 in Condition 1.

I figure anyone wearing a vest and a CW could get off 2 rds before he could drop his pencil.

Is there a real fear of being robbed or is this just a look-at-me thing?

I'm sure there was more than one employee there at the time. Partially it's because they can, also probably wards off idiots dumb enough to consider robbing a gun shop(after hours with no one there it'd be a burglary).

If I worked somewhere with thousands and thousands of dollars in inventory sought after by morons(criminals) and because it's a private business I'm allowed to be armed, yeah I probably would be as well.

The guy closest to my house has been in at least two gunfights with people attempting to rob his store. Would you, if you owned/worked at a gun store, prefer to be armed or a sitting duck?

Hell, I think they should allow bank tellers to wear protection and carry in that fashion - more power to him!

I think when you walk in to a gun shop and you are greeted with a hello they are also sizeing you up,im pretty sure they can tell if someone seems nervouse they are more on guard ready to draw.

I was going to give a smart guy answer until I really realized you really don't know do you? You really need an education on this subject as it makes no other sense why you would ask.

There is only one way to carry a 1911. Condition 1. What other way would you carry a 1911?

If you see a pencil pushing kid with a 1911, then assume every other employee in the store is also armed. Are they spread out all over the store? As you are eyeing the kid, are they eyeing you? Go ahead and try and drop the kid with your vest on in two seconds. The kid will not die in vain.

Yes gun stores get robbed. Here you go.

And yes he wants you to see he is armed. It is called deterrence and goes along with cameras, multiple employees, and panic alarms to the local police.

                  It happens.

The old National Shooting Club (now Reed's Indoor Range) in Santa Clara was the scene of an unfortunate incident back in '99, which I was personally experienced with.

                      ^^^ This ^^^

An old FFL / gunsmith of my acquaintance, who was also a retired LEO, often would get asked if his shop had ever been robbed. He, and his employees, always openly carried, and would answer that he hadn't yet met anyone who was willing to spend the rest of their life going the 15 feet between his register and the front door of the shop.

Does it happen... yes. Does an open show of deterrence give some actors the idea that they should caper elsewhere? Yes, again. For those ferw actors stupid enough to try it, the better angels of my nature hope that the shop employees are able to overcome the way that Quarter Bore did. I am familiar with his story, it is at turns illustrative, chilling and remarkable.

Not a lawyer, just a former LEO proud to have served.
