Firearms Shipping From Manufacturer ?

    Firearms Shipping From Manufacturer ?

    Quick question that I couldn't find an immediate answer to....


    When I ship a pistol to an FFL or back to the manufacturer for repair I am required to ship over-night per Fedral law. (At least that's the understanding I have..)


    Does this apply to manufacturers as well?


    I only ask because I was finally charged for TRP that I ordered months ago. I'm trying to gauge when it *should* arrive at my FFL.

      No. Manufacturers are not required to ship overnight. They probably shipped using whatever is the cheapest ground method.

          there is no federal or state law that says that you must ship firearms Over-night. Some shippers have internal policies that require over-night shipping (so that their employees have less opportunity to steal your handgun) , but it is not a federal requirement that you do so.

              Sounds like I might have a few more days until I can rush in to start my 10 day wait....


              Its been a while since I got a new pistol; so understandably I'm a bit anxious to get it done.

                  No problem. That's a nice one you're waiting for, so the desire to get it ASAP is definitely understandable.

                      Several manufacturers advise owners to identify the shipment as 'machine parts'. You're not breaking any laws, but some claim the shippers will refuse to honor insurance claims if it is lost. Nothing I've shipped has been lost.

                      The last time was only a few weeks ago and I used USPS to ship a rifle back to the manufacturer. They didn't ask what was in it and I insured it. It arrived fine and was returned to me UPS two days ago.

                          This isn't exactly correct. Manufacturerers are no different than anyone else. If using FedEx or UPS to ship handguns, they must go overnight or maybe 2nd day. If you use USPS is can go priority or maybe even first class (never tried first class on a handgun). Freight companies probaly don't care.

                          I wouldn't want my legal defense to be I shipped a handgun as "machine parts" when it is pretty clear I am supposed to notify them it is a firearm and I have to ship according to their rules.

                              Wanted to come back and update this thread....

                              TenPercent is right in so much as with my particular case the pistol arrived next day.


                              It would seem it is Springfield's prerogative to ship their pistols quickly even if it isn't the law. (Or as Wes suggested, it may have been their preferred carriers policy.)

                              In any case, I'm currently on day 3 of my 10 day purgatory.
