bringing out of state gun into CA

I'm planning on driving from tx to ca with my xd and wanted some input what kind of laws I should be aware of before taking it. I know once I reach the CA state lines I'll have to lock up my weapon in the trunk. I plan on flying back from CA to TX and having the gun in my checked luggage. Will the TSA give me any grief about having a gun bought in TX in CA?

So the gist of the story is I'm driving from TX to CA with my xd and flying back after 5 days. Do I need to do anything special besides declaring it at the check in counter? I am trying to avoid a cavity search

TSA won't shouldn't give you any grief about your XD and you're traveling with a legally owned handgun, so you don't need to worry about that. Just make sure you have a locking hard case that is locked with NON-TSA locks.

    That's it!

Get a good single gun metal locking case. Most have a cable that can wrap around stuff. Great for when you have to lock a gun in a car but also good for keeping your gun attached to your luggage should someone "accidently" open your bag while loading it onto the plane. I run the cable through the rolling wheel frame inside my luggage. Keep it unloaded and you will have to fill out a form at the ticket counter. But contact your Airline about it now so you know the full procedure.

Oh and leave the >10 round mags at home.

Lock it unloaded in your vehicle while in CA and no problems if you are worried about that.

Never had any problems whatsoever flying with a gun and I have done it many times in the last few years. Go to the TSA website and it will tell you the specifics of what you need to do. Basically it has to be unloaded inside a locking case that cannot be easily pried open. The counter agent will give you a firearms tag that you will need to sign that states the weapon is unloaded. You will usually have to take it to a a separate screening area. Sometimes the agent has asked me to put the firearms tag inside the locked case, sometimes they have just placed the tag inside my bag next to the locked case. Sometimes they ask for me to open the locked case to verify the gun is unloaded and sometimes they get jumpy when I start to open the locked gun case so they can verify it is unloaded. With the TSA they dont seem to really know what to do, or someone has told them a different procedure every time. You can fly with ammo in your checked bag as well but the ammo is only supposed to be in factory packaging. There was a weight limit to the amount of ammo you could have....it was something dumb like 11 pounds.

Dont take my word for anything....I am just another dude on the internet with what might be a set of isolated and unique experiences while traveling with my handgun. I do encourage you to look at the TSA site. I would not advocate calling the airline. This is a TSA thing and the only thing the airline ticket counter person is going to know for sure is that you need the bright orange firearms tag. There may or may not be a separate screening area depending on the airport.

While transporting in CA, the handgun must be unloaded and in a locked container. Ammo can be in the same locked container.
DO NOT BRING any 11+ round magazines into CA.

While flying handgun must be unloaded and in a locked container, which should be locked with a non-TSA lock.
Ammo should be in factory packaging.
Just declare ithe firearm/ammo at the check in counter.
Also, check with the airline you are using to see if they have any additional rules.
