    precision .308 rifle

Hey guys, I'm currently looking at a Remington 700 5R in .308 and I was wondering if there is a similar rifle that is cheaper or just stick with the 5R? I was also looking at the sps but I could get some extra change if the 5R is better without any upgrades that I gotta add.

    Buy a savage
Without upgrades, a savage is more accurate out of the box.

      This^^^

I have also found that most any .308 is a precision weapon in my hands.

Any particular model of savage that are good? As for the upgrades I was on really gonna do major changes but if were to pick up the rem sps I would change the trigger and the bolt carrier. But like said, the 5R already as a smooth bolt carrier, trigger, barrel and some other things.

the savage 10 FCP-K is a great rifle but the Remington 700 5R has just a small edge over it. I run a Remington 700P 308, my buddy runs a Savage FCP-K in 308. Same scopes, same bipods, same factory ammo and the Remington 700 will out shoot the Savage. Now I've shot a group with his and he shot a group with mine and we still get the same results. My Remington 700P can run .062 in group at a 100 yards. The Savage can run a .92 at 100 yards, Both rifle are well under 1 MOA. I believe you'll be happier with the Rem 700.

Any of the 10 series savage are good to go. The 12 varmint series are pretty good I hear, I've never used one myself though. I own a 10FP in .223 and I had a hard time deciding between a 700sps with a 20in barrel and a 10fp with a 24in barrel. I wasn't planning on doing anything other than putting a bipod and scope on it. The first time taking it out and zeroing it in I shot less than 1pm groups at 100 yards.

What are your intentions w/ the rifle?
I shoot a Savage 10fp in 308 for 200 yd High Power Sihlouette. It will always outshoot me.
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

Well idk what I wanna do with it but I want something with options. I want something that can reach up to 500-800 yrds and also I was told that the military uses the 5R at 26" so I can't go wrong with the 24". I've already got my tactical rifles(m4) so just a precision is what I need next.

Why not another Remington? You can find a brand new Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308 for less than $600. It's the same barrel and action in the Remington 700P(standard police sniper model).

The stock leaves something to be desired but you can add one that's more customized to your liking. Are you really going to notice any improved accuracy with the 5R when the SPS Varmint is a sub moa rifle?

It may be wiser to put money into ammunition and more shooting time, than to buy a 5R at more expense, because it shares the same barrel type as the Army's M24. The 5R is ugly silver too.

Not in my neck of the woods. More like $750 around here.

If you're up to buying from out of state dealers you can definitely get one for less than $600.

Since this will be my first precision rifle I have a question for you vets. Would it be more profitable in the long run to purchase the rem sps rather then the 5r or vise versa. Also I've been searching and I've narrowed it down to a Remington varmint SF, Remington 5R or a savage fcp hs precision. Don't have any xp with these guns or an LR so if you got any info before I pull the trigger on any of them please share.

                            5R

Honestly if you are going bang for your buck in the long run grab a 5R. With a good mount and decent glass you will be able to do some great shooting. Granted, all of these rifles are only as accurate as you are That being said, I shoot a 5r (biased i know) and with a relatively light handload I am achieving 2680fps and grouping 0.225moa at 100 meters. I haven't shot paper targets for accurate grouping, but It rings an 8" gong out to 800m with ease. Beautiful shooting rifle. Just my 2 cents.
