    Shooting steel with HP/SP rounds

Does anyone shoot Wolf/Brown Bear soft or hollow points at steel targets? Do those rounds do as much damage as their FMJ or steel core counterparts? My 55 and 62 gr steel core Wolf dinged up our steel a tiny bit, but I'd rather shoot something that will preserve our plates for awhile.

Any bi-metal bullet will damage steel targets. The best way to preserve steel targets is to only shoot non steel/bi-metal jacketed bullets.

Would FMJ rounds like American Eagle be ok?

The FMJ Wolf/Brown Bear ammo does not have steel core projectiles. They use steel jacketed projectiles with a copper wash. Their soft point ammo also uses steel jacketed projectiles but with the lead tip exposed.

The FMJ Wolf rounds I used did leave a slight indentation, more so than our surplus 5.45x39. Would the soft or hollow points do less damage?

as long as the bullet doesn't attract a magnet, you should be fine.

Velocity of the rounds is what will damage heavy steel targets. If you shoot rounds over 1800 FPS, then they will leave dimples and craters. 9mm rounds of any type do not hurt the targets I make.

A guy at the action pistol match in Piru was shooting the steel with HP.

Everyone was getting pelted by ricochets. It wasn't much fun being a spectator.

                Stick to FMJ.
