WOW that guy was lucky. Maybe the cylinder didn't lineup with the forcing cone right?

According to his story, he believes the problem was a reloading issue (filling the case with a double charge of powder). He also indicated that the double charge caused two neighboring rounds in the cylinder to detonate. He's dam lucky he was shooting at an indoor range with segmented shooting bays, otherwise someone standing next to him could have been seriously injured.

Sounds like the old "double shot of Bullseye" syndrome. When using a powder measure or progressive press, use powder with some bulk and visually check the case before you seat the bullet. When using Bullseye or othe fast-burning powder, always be aware of the double-charge.

Hence I load on a Dillon xl650 with the powder charge alarm on it. I also visually check but the extra insurance is well worth it.

Me too. I watch the detent on the charge alarm, if it's not right in the middle where I calibrated it I pull the case and measure. Even if the alarm didn't sound. If you are at or near max load with titegroup/other fast powder the charge alarm may not go off if you go over by .1, .2 grains, or more, depending on how you zero the rod for the charge alarm.

When I am reloading I tell the wife that I can't be contacted until I come back into the house, it's potentially a life or death situation I'm dealing with.

Had a Slam Fire on a M1 Grand

Like a fool I was half chambering my rounds, plus I had just had a trigger job done . I was on the bench when it went off. The guys on either side of me threw themselves on the concret, some ladies water broke. The range officer took a good minute before he came over to see if I was Ok. Across my left had laid the rifle in about six pieces. My Right hand was still over the receiver. I had about five pieces of stock hanging out of it. The guy on my right picked himself up and ran to the bathroom. I mean I was the one with the simulated load in my drawers. But I calmly pulled the wood out of my hand wraped my stuff up and left. Oh yea, I also had a hand full of bandaids. Never do that with an M1. Your an accident looking for a place to happen

You bet it can do that. When I see people doing that I tell them the story. Of course I'm a little annal about it also. Other than really shaking me up and the splinters I came out Ok. If I had been hunched over the rifle it would have been totaly different story

How exactly did that happen? What are the mechanics of the the gun's destruction? I just did a quick google read on slamfires, and there was no mention of broken guns... just unsafe doubles or complete magazine bursts that weren't always down range.

I also though slamfires did not do any damage to rifles - that it just fired when you were not expecting it to, ie the reason why we feed from mags in semi auto rifles and not dropping them in the chamber. Was it a slam fire that resulted in a out of battery fire? Or was the round itself also defective?

I think they call this a Slam Fire

I had put the round halfway in the chamber. When I closed the bolt the round fired before the bolt had battery'd over. It blew the front of the bolt off. It blew the stock in about 5 or 6 pieces with the splinters going into my hand. Never did find the rest of the bolt, I was so shook that I didn't even look for it.
