Do you guys ask a copy of the DROS?

Just curious. I guess LE taught me to keep records of everything, but today I was hanging out at the local gun shop and shop keeper says no one really asks for it.

I keep them for record's sake and wondering if you guys keep yours or don't care for them.

    Thanks.

I do for handguns. If you ever have to have a shop look up your DROS, it really helps to know the DROS number. If you don't get a copy, at least record that number on your receipt.

Yup. I have my original DROS for my handguns. I scan them and keep a PDF file in my computer. To me, a DROS is anoter piece of paper for proof of ownership.

Especially when I spend 500-700 dollars, I expect the proper paper work with it.

For purchases from out-of-state vendors I keep a copy of the DROS. For purchases from FFLs in CA, I keep the DROS if I get a copy (almost always)and keep a copy of the receipt.

My logic? It shows that in the event there is no record of the transaction I can prove that: 1) I DROSed the firearm; and 2) I made a good faith effort in complying with all applicable laws (for firearms transfer at least).

I don't depend on the DOJ BOF to keep accurate records. I'm sure they try hard, but stuff happens; corrupted databases, data entry errors, etc.

Getting a little off topic, I also carry a notebook with me when I shoot that documents ownership, contains a series of documents like CA firearm laws, the BOF AW Guide, William M. Wiese, Jr. memorandum, Harrott Decision, Iggy Declaration, manuals for each firearm and scope, and notes performance and issues for each firearm. I recently had an off duty LEO asking me about my POF/Titan 308 and explained to him why the firearm was legal. He "got it" and I suspect went out and got one.

Unless it is for a handgun, there is no point. A long gun DROS proves nothing. The best thing you can keep is simply your store receipt. You can always run your own trace of sorts and call the gun shop and ask for your gun info as gun stores pretty much keep that stuff forever. If they don't have it, you are in the clear!

I have a few copies of the DROS and or receipts when I bought firearms directly from places like RSR. But with a long gun at least I dont think it helps very much as the serial # and make / model is not listed.

I always keep a copy of the DROS in addtion to reciepts. I then have a microsoft Excel spreadsheet where I enter the info and a picture for insurance purposes. It includes Purchase date, price, merchant, serial number and picture.

I also keep a spread sheet for Ammo by round and will soon anve one for spent brass.

In many legal "domestic situations," the court requires proof of a sale or transfer. They will not take your word for it. I've done this twice for a customer.

In another instance, a person had his guns stolen and he had failed to record the serial number of a 10/22 he had done a transfer on. While the S/N
wasn't on the DROS sheet, the DROS number allowed us to find the listing in our bound book and give him the serial number.

I usually ask the customers if they would like copies of their DROS. Most of them say no, and that's after putting some thought into it.

I always get a copy of hanggun dros's. I make a copy of it, put it in my guns folder in the filing cabinet along with the original reciept and any paperwork for the gun, warranty info, etc etc. It never hurts to keep all original paperwork in my opinion.

Either receipt or dros. Any piece of article to prove I actually own the gun. I only keep it for when I need to prove its not stolen by some LEO which hasn't happened and hopefully won't happen.

I never had to ask. The shops I go to usually give you a dros or a full receipt
