Even double ear protection doesn't work.

I need some high end ear muffs and ear inserts, mine sucks. My left ear is killing me.

Buy your wife some chocolate when she's PMSing -

        Works on mine.

And buy the chewy gooey carmel kind -

        Takes longer to eat....

Go to an audiologist or someone that makes custom fitted ear plugs. Get them made for the most db reduction.

Buy a good set of muffs.

Do not put your muffs over your shooting glasses. Maintain a good seal around your ears at all times.

Shoot only outdoors and maybe stick to smaller calibers.

That's all you really can do, besides cutting down or stopping.

Be careful though. Once your hearing is damaged, it is damaged.

Do you have any idea on roughly how much a set of custom plugs from an audiologist would run?

I found an audiologist near by me. I think we paid $100 or so.

I know you can pay less than that via the internet. The kit gets mailed to you and you do the mold yourself and mail it in and they mail back the completed plugs to you.

I was okay with paying more because I wanted the plugs to be checked to make sure they were fitted correctly.

maybe thats it, so getting fitted ear plugs will correct this problem? how do you put your glasses on with ear muffs?

The problem is that if the arms of the glasses are sitting directly ontop of your ears, and the earmuff seal is broken because of that, they're useless. It's not a problem with every person or every set of earmuffs. Just a small gap would let enough sound in.

The same thing goes for earplugs, the slightest gap(such as a crease from when you squashed them before shoving them in your ears) will let a bunch of sound in. Yes, there is a correct way to put in cheap foam earplugs.

Maybe the OP's ear holes are hella big! jk. If you get them in right, cheapo foam plugs should be totally sufficient for shooting. Ya gotta roll em tight and stuff em way in there, tho.

Did you try the reach-around-and-tug, blood? Some people have to pull up and back on their ear to straighten the ear canal to allow the plug to go in fully.
