Most transfers of firearms between two regular California residents have to be processed through a California licensed dealer. There is a lot of good information at this link...

You both go to a gun dealer, do the paperwork, pay the money, wait the 10 days, then its yours.Comment

thanks for the link. But I thought there are diffrent places for diffrent kinds of firearms and diffrent wait times for hand vs long.Comment

There are some exceptions to the general rules, but it is really pretty simple:
Two unrelated persons - Handgun must go through an FFL, $35
Modern long gun must go through an FFL, $35.
10 day waiting period for the above two.
Long gun over 50 years old, cash and carry.
Parent/child/grandparent - No FFL required, no waiting period. Handgun requires paperwork and $19 be sent to the DOJ.
Note that not all FFLs will transfer handguns.
All FFLS are required to perform person to person transfers for a fee of no more than $35, but if the FFL does not carry handguns (such as Big-5, "old" Wal-Mart/K-Mart/Sears, etc....) they are not required to perform handgun transfers.- Rich

I'm pretty sure there were never any legal requirements for different stores for, say handguns and long guns, and if there were ever different waiting periods, the time is 10 days for everything now.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!Comment

The OP might be remembering back to when handguns and long guns had different waiting periods. I think between 1996 and 1997 there was period when handguns had a 15 day wait and long guns had a 10 day wait.__________________
