    Hi ALL

What is the law on owning a firearms, if you live near a school. I might be purchasing a house that is across the street from a school , A friend told me there is a law, that says no fireamrs can be kept within 100'.00'' of a school. Is this correct ?

    Thanks for help

IANAL (I am not a lawyer), but:

If you are referring to the Gun-Free School Zone Act, it is 1,000 ft. But there are exemptions for your residence. From the California Penal Code:

      626.9
      (c) Subdivision (b) does not apply to the possession of a firearm
under any of the following circumstances:
      (1) Within a place of residence or place of business or on private
property, if the place of residence, place of business, or private
property is not part of the school grounds and the possession of the
      firearm is otherwise lawful.

Yes there IS a law... actually, there are two laws... but there are exceptions for residents living within the 1000' distance. Just look up Gun Free School Zone Act.

The Gun Free School Zone enhances penalties for use or possession of firearms in the zone. Criminals obviously see the sign and commit their crimes elsewhere.

What if I get pulled over while passing a school and the cop sees guns in my car?
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

PC 626.9 (c)(2) [the paragraph that follows the quoted code above] addresses that as an additional exemption, after the one for residents:

                  (2) When the firearm is an unloaded pistol, revolver, or other
firearm capable of being concealed on the person and is in a locked
container or within the locked trunk of a motor vehicle.
This section does not prohibit or limit the otherwise lawful
transportation of any other firearm, other than a pistol, revolver,
or other firearm capable of being concealed on the person, in
                  accordance with state law.

Don't forget the Federal Gun Free Schools Act. It requires that all firearms, not just handguns, be in a locked container when being transported within 1,000 feet of a schoool.
